    Summary

    This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) Officer position.

    Air Reserve Technicians (ARTs) are part of the regular civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service. In addition, ARTs are required to maintain active membership in an Air Force Reserve unit so long as they occupy ART positions. As members of reserve units, ARTs receive on average one weekend of military training per month. In addition, they are eligible for 15 days active duty tour each year for which military leave is granted with full civilian pay. Air Force Reserve units and members are subject to immediate call to active duty in mobilization to meet a national emergency.

    This is a standing register used to fill positions at AFRC locations as vacancies occur. Some positions may have promotion potential to a higher grade than the grade being filled. Multiple vacancies may be filled from this announcement. The beginning and ending salaries may vary depending on the location of position.

    The cut-off date for these positions is the 25th of each month. Therefore, if we receive your application by midnight on the 25th of the month, you are eligible to go on the register the following month. Retired military are usually ineligible for membership in the Air Force Reserve. Retired military personnel who have active Air Force Reserve assignments may apply provided they show assignment (position and unit) on their application.

    Responsibilities

    The primary purpose of this position is as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) to serve as a copilot assisting with the operation of aircraft and performing administrative duties related to flight/mission accomplishment such as scheduling, mission planning, operational training, and mission management. Upon successful completion of training requirements, satisfaction of time-in-grade requirements and a display of successful performance, the incumbent may be noncompetitively promoted to the first interim grade level of GS-11 upon successful completion of training requirements, satisfaction of time-in-grade requirements and display of successful performance at the GS-11 level, the incumbent may be noncompetitively promoted to the target grade of GS-12 Airplane/Helicopter Pilot. This position is part of the developmental Airplane/Helicopter Flight Instructor Program, which provides employees with training and valuable experience that serves as the recruitment pool from which GS-13 Airplane/Helicopter Flight Instructors are selected. Incumbent of this position will perform the following duties:

    • Under the guidance and assistance of the aircraft commander/flight instructor and in the role of a copilot, assist in the operation of aircraft in order to gain the experience needed to become a qualified pilot in the unit aircraft.
    • Participate in discussions, meetings or serve on panels or committees regarding unit aircraft and flying mission.
    • Perform and assist with other flight related duties supporting the accomplishment of the unit operational and training mission.

    Occasional travel - Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
