Major Duties:

You will be required to troubleshoot, repair, and/or overhaul major automotive components and systems such as engines, transmissions, differentials and transaxles, electronic fuel injection systems, emission control systems, and related electrical, electronic, hydraulic, fuel, and other assemblies. You must be able to tear down, adjust, repair, reassemble, and run operational checks on components of these systems following instructions contained in technical manuals. You may be required to specialize in tearing down, overhauling, and rebuilding one or a limited variety of major systems for a variety of vehicles, such as automobiles, trucks, buses, and tractors. You must be able to use a wide variety of test procedures and equipment to trace hard-to-locate defects or problems, and then complete repairs and installations with little or no technical advice.

You must meet the grade level qualification and eligibility requirements at the time of submission of your application. If your qualifications and eligibility change, you will need to update your responses in the questionnaire and/or resume reflecting those changes; otherwise, you will continue to receive consideration under your original application. Qualifications:

WG-10: You must have experience troubleshooting and repairing a variety of automotive systems such as engines, transmission and gear reduction systems, transaxles, drive line and rear axle assemblies, electrical and electronic systems, fuel injection systems, emission control systems, braking systems, hydraulic and other assemblies. You must be capable of interpreting and applying manufacturer’s repair manuals, schematics, diagnostic codes and safety manuals sufficient to accomplish these tasks and be familiar with all tools, equipment, and materials used by automotive mechanics.

 

Quality Ranking Factor: ASE certification is required for duty stations located in California, for all other locations it is preferred

 

Screen Out Element: You must have the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. This means you must be able to work independently, make decisions, accept job responsibility, exercise initiative and plan operations.

Background Security Investigation:  You will need to successfully complete a background investigation before you can be appointed into this position.

Medical/Physical:  You must pass a pre employment medical examination. Prior to appointment, the person selected for this position must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician.

 

Drug Testing:  You must submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result before you can be appointed into this position.  After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

 

Work Conditions:  You will make repairs on vehicles where parts worked on are in hard-to-reach places. You must stand, stoop, stretch and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions often for extended periods of time. You may frequently lift and carry parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Due to continuous exposure to dirt, dust, and grease with the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts and strains, you will be required to follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses, and respirators.

 

Travel:  You may be required to travel away from normal duty station.

 

Overtime and Shift Work:  Call back and emergency overtime may be regular requirements of this position.

 

Uniforms:  Work requires wearing protective clothing and/or safety equipment.

 

Motor Vehicle Operation: You must possess a valid automobile driver's license at the time of appointment.

 

 


How You Will Be Evaluated:

You will be evaluated based upon the resume/transcript (if applicable) and responses you provide on the job specific questionnaire that is required as part of the application process for this position.   • VRA:  Please submit a DD 214 (Member Copy 4) and VRA letter if eligibility is based on disability.

What To Expect Next:

Once you have completed the application process and submitted your answers, you will receive notification via email. (You may still need to upload supporting documentation.)  Your application will remain in the inventory of tentatively qualified applicants. You will be notified of your rating and/or referral to the selecting official each time your name is referred on a certificate for consideration. If further evaluation or interviews are required, you will be contacted. We expect to make selections within 90 days of each certificate issued. If you are referred on a certificate, you will be notified of the outcome once certificates are returned.
