Director's Office, VA Black Hills Health Care System, Fort Meade, SD.  Incumbent will be expected to travel to the Hot Springs site on a regular basis.  The position also involves periodic travel out-of-state for meetings, conferences, etc.

Job Summary:

The VA Black Hills Health Care System (VA BHHCS) is located in the beautiful Black Hills of western South Dakota, where we are known for our blue skies, pine forests, rich history, moderate climate and friendly western hospitality. VA BHHCS provides primary and secondary medical and surgical care, along with residential rehabilitation treatment program (RRTP) services, extended nursing home care and tertiary psychiatric inpatient care services, for veterans residing in South Dakota and portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Care is delivered through the Fort Meade (near Sturgis) and Hot Springs VA Medical Centers, as well as through a number of community based outpatient and rural outreach clinics. VA Black Hills is part of VA Midwest Health Care Network.



Major Duties:
The Chief of Staff is a member of the facility's top management team, providing advice and counsel in defining and accomplishing the facility's mission and goals, and ensuring that high quality patient care is delivered in a resource efficient manner.  He/she provides leadership and organizational stewardship by promoting the development of healthcare professionals through counseling, mentoring and teaching.  Incumbent promotes an effective mix, coordination and support of clinical programs by evaluating current and potential patient needs, clinical workload and resources, and special programs/mandates.  He/she promotes standards of clinical competence and conduct for staff which are maintained through compliance with the credentialing and privileging processes, monitoring and evaluation of clinical practice, peer review, and other appropriate quality assurance activities.  Creates an environment of system-oriented continuous quality improvement within which clinical program effectiveness and quality of care are evaluated.

Qualifications:

INCUMBENT MUST MEET THE QUALIFICATION STANDARDS ESTABLISHED FOR HIS/HER PROFESSION IN ACCORDANCE WITH VA HANDBOOK 5005:


1. BOARD CERTIFICATION (PHYSICIAN APPLICANTS ONLY)


2. INCUMBENT MUST POSSESS AND MAINTAIN A FULL, ACTIVE, CURRENT, AND UNRESTRICTED LICENSE TO PRACTICE MEDICINE OR DENTISTRY IN A STATE, TERRITORY OR COMMONWEALTH OF THE UNITED STATES OR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.


3. SUBJECT TO PHYSICAL STANDARDS ESTABLISHED BY VA HANDBOOK 5019.
4. MUST BE PROFICIENT IN SPOKEN AND WRITTEN ENGLISH AS REQUIRED BY 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) AND 7407(d).

The VA Black Hills Health Care System is looking for a creative, dynamic and experienced leader to join our Executive Leadership Team.  Preferred candidates must have a strong demonstrated track record of clinical leadership and administrative experience, preferably at the Service Chief/Department Chairman level or higher.  The candidate should have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to promote medical or dental staff excellence in service, teaching and research.  Preferred physician applicants for the Chief of Staff vacancy should be American board certified.

VET PRO CREDENTIALING:  Individuals selected for positions that have patient care responsibilities are subject to undergoing an electronic credentialing process called VetPro.  As part of this process, it will be necessary for you to submit complete information concerning your professional education, training, experience, licensure and certifications using VetPro.  The candidate selected will be provided with further information on how to use VetPro.

DRUG TESTING:  All applicants tentatively selected for Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) employment in a Testing Designated Position (TDP) are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.  Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
