The incumbent of this position serves as a senior scientific expert and authority in Geological and Environmental Systems (GES). The position reports to the Deputy Director, Science & Technology Strategic Planning & Programs at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), and may have a duty station at any one of NETL’s research sites. The position provides scientific leadership for NETL’s core competency in geological and environmental systems, positioning the Laboratory’s GES human capital and research facilities to deliver best-in-class research and technology development, in direct support of the DOE and NETL missions for safe, sustainable, affordable domestic energy resource development and utilization.

This position is responsible for developing and advocating for strategies that build and sustain a world-class competency in geological and environmental systems at NETL; ensuring the GES competency is well positioned to meet current and future organizational need; representing NETL’s geological and environmental systems competency to high-level internal and external customers; and working with other senior level strategists to develop and enable a research portfolio that is forward looking and effectively leverages NETL’s technical competencies to meet customer requirements.

  • Travel at approximately 50% may be required.
