The Licensed Vocational Nurse utilizes technical and manual skills under the direction of the Regstered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner or a licensed Physician in the assigned area.  Incumbent has the knowledge and skills to carry out a wide range of nursing care duties for selected groups of residents. 

Preferred Requirements:

1.       Current proficiency in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (Required prior to assuming clinical duties and must remain current –VHA Directive 11-77)

2.       Minimum of 2 years of recent clinical experience within the last 5 years

3.       Must be flexible with scheduling to work rotating shifts, weekends and/or holidays.

4.       One year of nursing experience on a rehab, long-term care, dementia or mental health unit.

5.       Certification and skill in IV insertions

6.       Excellent interpersonal skills are required along with flexibility in a dynamic, ever changing, fast paced environment. Successful documentation of performance and competencies is required along with dependability and strict adherence to privacy and confidentiality policies

7.       Must have a working knowledge of anatomy & physiology related to this specialty. Must have computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, and the ability to navigate a computerized patient record system. Excellent interpersonal skills are required along with the ability to work independently and effectively in a diverse team environment



1.       Makes observations and thoroughly documents care and the patient's response.  Appropriately seeks assistance and guidance by informing RN or medical provider of changes in the patient's condition requiring higher-level intervention. 

2.       The LVN performs, reports, and records assigned nursing care and treatments. Adheres to standards of practice and safe technique in preparation and administration of medication.

3.       Reviews daily schedules for patient care needs and appointments.

4.       Demonstrates understanding of age- and population-specific characteristics that affect the health care needs of the Veteran. 

5.       Promptly recognizes urgent or emergent patient care situations, seeks assistance and effectively intervenes as directed when appropriate. 

6.       Aids in patient education

7.       Interacts and communicates appropriately with patients and family members.

8.       Demonstrates professional behavior (i.e., respect, civility, ability to accept constructive criticism), effective communication and interpersonal skills.

9.       Adheres to principles of infection control, safety, and universal precautions.

10.   Incumbent possesses knowledge of proper handling and pre-cleaning of reusable medical equipment. 

11.   Demonstrates competence utilizing special equipment needed to perform job duties.

12.   Follows policy and procedures related to fire and disaster drills, safety and security measures. 

13.   Maintains confidentiality of electronic, written, and/or verbal patient information.

14.   Maintains a work environment that honors diversity. 

15.   Serves as a resource and advocate in the protection of patient and family rights. 

16.   Completes mandatory reviews and education, as well as self-assessment.

17.   Supports patient-driven care in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner, using evidence-based principles.

18.   Promotes patient and personnel safety.
