    Responsibilities

    The incumbent will function as an integral member of the GI team during procedures of the gastrointestinal tract. Gastroenterology (GI) Technicians assist the practitioner in endoscopic procedures, such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic ultrasound. The technicians ensure proper performance of equipment, set up equipment, and reprocess endoscopic reusable medical equipment (RME).

    Technicians will be either at the GS-6 level or the full performance level GS-7. A professional standards board will review and approve the appropriate grade level for the MIT (GI).

    Technicians at the GS-6 level aid the staff with procedures which are routine and standardized in nature. Assignments at this level require knowledge of basic medical terminology as well as common gastrointestinal anatomy.Technicians at the GS-7 full performance level function with minimal instruction, assisting the staff with complex specialized procedures such as ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). They are proficient with GI endoscopic equipment and ensure proper performance of endoscopic equipment; select alternative equipment or adjust equipment settings to accommodate patient needs and produce high quality technique.

    • Secures patients' confidence/cooperation during procedures. Explains the endoscopy procedure within technician's scope. Answers patients' questions during procedures. Position patients for desired results and cushions and shields patients as appropriate.
    • Determines technical factors, sets controls and operates equipment and instruments. Sets up and adjusts specialized endoscopic equipment with multiple features that requires precise patient positioning to operate correctly.
    • Operates endoscopy equipment and assists medical staff with or performs diagnostic procedures used to diagnose medical conditions.
    • Performs diagnostic tests and procedures by performing a range of diagnostic support duties
    • Provides general clerical/admin support to the unit
    • Maintains patient records, maintains control records, documents test results
    • Performs patient care procedures such as collection of specimens, applying dressings, adjusting equipment
