    Duties Summary

    This position is a Hospitalist for nights only and is responsible to the designated manager in the assigned area; and accountable for the coordination of care for a culturally diverse medically ill veteran patient population. The Provider possesses the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of care management principles within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting, which will then enable effective implementation of health promotion and prevention practices.

    Responsibilities

    Duties include but not limited to;

    • The Hospitalist/Mid-level Provider is authorized to provide care and write medical orders for patients assigned to the facility for care.
    • All orders, discharge summaries, progress notes, consultation requests, and physical examinations (as applicable) written by the Mid-level Provider will clearly be identified as such in the written or electronic medical records.
    • Perform initial and interim history and physical (H&P) examinations on inpatients and outpatients assigned to his/her care.
    • Screen patients to determine the need for hospital admission.
    • Order routine laboratory, radiological, electrocardiograms, and diagnostic tests on assigned patients.
    • Perform venipuncture to obtain test specimens when personnel who customarily perform these procedures are not available.
    • Initiate and/or expedite requests for consultations, special tests, or studies on assigned patients, and will keep the supervising physician appraised about the tests and studies required and their results and progress.
    • Perform rounds on assigned patients.
    • Order and/or insert nasogastric suction catheters as necessary
    • Start intravenous (IV) solutions and administer IV medications.
    • Order restraints when consistent with defined policy.
    • Administer topical/local anesthesia. Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.

    Work Schedule: 7:00pm - 7:00am, rotating nights as determined by the supervisor

    Qualifications
    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/26/2019. .

    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Proficient in spoken and written English
    • BLS and ACLS certifications approved by the American Heart Association.

    Preferred experience: 4 to 5 years of Mid-level Provider experience.

    The NP must be a graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

    The PA must meet one of the following: (1). A Bachelor's degree from PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or (2). Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a Bachelor's degree in a health-related occupation or health-related science, or (3). Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training certification must total at least five years. As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment. The requirement does not apply to non-certified PA on VA rolls as of that date.

    Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing, frequent bending, stooping, walking, reaching, and repetitive motion. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing, using a computer/keyboard, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to fast pace requiring the handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
