The selected OR Registered Nurse reports directly to the Nurse Manager of the Operating Room.  Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process and plans, coordinates, delivers and evaluates nursing care to patients whose protective reflexes or self-care capabilities are potentially compromised during surgical and/or other invasive procedures.
  • Works collaboratively with other perioperative professionals (surgeons, anesthesia care providers, surgical technicians, etc.) to meet patient needs and is accountable for the outcomes resulting from the nursing care provided during surgical procedures.
  • Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.
  • Considers all characteristics of the individual, including sex and sex role identification, age and life stage, state of health, race and culture, socio-economic status, values and previous experience with similar events, in order to assist each patient to identify and meet basic health needs and improve his/her  health status to the individual's maximum.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of VA policies, procedures and clinical protocols.
  • Serves as preceptor and mentor.
  • Leads teams in the delivery of nursing care, including nursing assistants, surgical technicians, student nurse technicians, graduate nurse technicians and registered nurses.
  • Manages patients with infection control precautions, including standard and reverse isolation, TB-airborne, MRSA, VRE, and C-dif.
  • Takes initiative in developing and evaluating unit level and/or disease specific to standards of care, policies, procedures and nursing programs that guide nursing practice and/or measure performance.
  • Provides post mortem care as needed.
  • Completes all required education in prescribed timelines, including Talent Management, recertification and continuing education.
  • Responsible for demonstrating and maintaining full competency in the use, pre-cleaning and/or reprocessing of reusable medical equipment.
  • Ensures that the appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and manufacturer's instructions are followed for any step in the use of RME (pre-cleaning, reprocessing, disinfection, sterilization, maintenance) in which he/she is involved.
  • Consistently protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Action of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, statues and policy, and VHA policy. 
  • Preferred Experience / Qualifications

  • Minimum of three successful years of ASF, medical/surgical, critical care, OR/PACU or related experience
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to be dependable, self-directed, and flexible including flexibility in assignment and time scheduling
  • Demonstrated evidence of sound decision making and application of critical thinking skills
  • Work Schedule:  6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., primarily Monday through Friday.  May be required to work extended hours and/or change schedule to accommodate the needs of the service.
