About the Agency
The Staff Officer position is located in the Advance and Staffing Division of the Office of the Secretary, Executive Secretariat (S/ES). The Executive Secretariat serves as the operational link between the Secretary, his/her closest advisers, and the rest of the Department.
Staff Officers are responsible for coordinating the preparation of policy papers and correspondence for the Secretary, Deputy Secretaries, Under Secretary for Political Affairs, other Department principals as required, and the White House.
This position is eligible for telework; additional criteria will be required (e.g., supervisory approval).
- Tasks out, tracks, and ensures final delivery of policy papers, correspondence, and other materials for the Secretary, both Deputy Secretaries, the Under Secretary for Political Affairs (including paper for official travel by the two Deputies and Under Secretary), the Counselor, and the White House, to include papers for the President's use in meetings and events with visiting foreign dignitaries, ensuring papers are accurate, well-written, fully coordinated, timely, and complete.
- Facilitates communication of policy and procedural matters between bureaus, Department principals, and the White House, and provides consistent and reliable feedback.
- In preparation for travel by the Deputy Secretaries and the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, coonrdinates with the relevant principal's staff to task briefing materials, to include liaison with bureaus to ensure all paper is timely and accurate, and preparation of briefing books for the principals and their staff.
