Summary

The Intermediate Care Technician serves as an advance technician for outpatient care settings such as; primary care, mental health, and specialty clinics.
As an ICT Generalist the incumbent may serve in a medical center, community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC), mobile medical unit or may have virtual/remote assignments.

Duties

VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) is an integrated tertiary health care system comprised of two hospitals, the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center in Murfreesboro and the Nashville VA Medical Center, as well as 21 outpatient clinics located in middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky. TVHS provides ambulatory care, primary care, and secondary care in acute medicine and surgery, specialized tertiary care, transplant services, spinal cord injury outpatient care, and a full range of extended care and mental health services. More than 146,000 Veterans in middle Tennessee, southern Kentucky, and northern Georgia trust VA TVHS for their health care needs. TVHS is the seventh largest VA medical center system in the nation serving roughly 75 counties with robust research and development, health care innovation, and more. The Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) is an occupational specialty, especially for former military combat medics, medical technicians, and corpsmen. As an ICT, you will operate within clearly defined clinical competencies.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Completing approved templates and tools, such as intake/outtake forms, normal result note follow up, clinical reminders, procedures and intervention notes established by the agency.
  • Assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an outpatient setting. This can include assisting licensed personnel with crisis intervention, management of aggressive or suicidal psychiatric patients, by providing one-to-one observations and applying prevention and management of disruptive behavior techniques (PMDB). Assists license staff with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life-threatening situations. You will assist licensed staff with setting up equipment and providing treatment during in personal or virtual visits.
  • Operating specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes. Observes patient status and keeps licensed clinical staff informed of any change in condition. You will assist clinical providers with emergency medical care, provides emergency response as part of the Rapid-Response Team (RRT), and assists with training of other hospital clinical staff.
  • Perform observation-based screening and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel (i.e. clinical reminders, obtaining patient health history, chief complaints, medical history, etc.).
  • Operate specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes.
  • Perform diagnostic tests (i.e. vital signs, EKG)
  • Medication administration (topical administration, limited PO medication, emergent medications)
  • Wound care (i.e. bandages, application of dressings and wound measurements)
  • Assist with patient exams and screenings, including utilizing technology such as telehealth peripherals.
  • Patient education within scope of care, while providing an intervention.
  • Follow-up care.
  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) - thoroughly and appropriately document actions, interventions and procedures in the medical records.
  • ICTs may perform tasks after proper education, training and competency, demonstrating knowledge, skills and abilities.

Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): The Health Aid and Technician Series, 0640, has a minimum qualification entry requirement. Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirement, you may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
  • Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the federal service). Specialized experience is defined as assisting medical personnel with surgical procedures; operating medical equipment; working with acute and chronic mental health conditions and crises; working with emergency medicine techniques and emergency communication; perform observation-based screening, collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel; recognize life threatening situations and act to correct these emergent situations according to established national or local protocols; performing the necessary procedures for the preparation and transfer of specimens to the laboratory for processing, including but not limited to labeling and packaging. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. OR,
  • Education: Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Intermediate Care Technician position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR,
  • Combination: Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education (in excess of the first year or 18 semester hours) and specialized experience to meet total experience requirements. NOTE: If using education combined with specialized experience to qualify, a copy of your transcript is required.

Preferred Experience: Experience in the military as a Hospital Corpsman, Combat Medic, Medical Technician to work in conjunction with Podiatrist to provide basic foot care to veterans.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
