Summary

This position will serve as an Maintenance Mechanic Leader at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. The incumbent will perform general maintenance and repair requirements in the following areas: HVAC, Carpentry, Electrical, Locksmithing, Masonry, and Painting.

Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • General maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and equipment
  • Duties include construction of foundations, buildings, walls, floors, partitions, including corners, sills, lintels, and arches, as well as slabs, sidewalks, curbs, stairs, manholes, catch basins, fire chambers chimneys, etc.
  • Performs specific maintenance and repair procedures to install, maintain, and repair general industrial plant machinery and equipment such as emergency generators, medical vacuum pumps, medical air compressors, sandblasting machines, degreasers, chain hoists, hydraulic jacks, fire-fighting equipment, steam cleaners, and other non-production machinery and equipment of similar complexity
  • Skill in understanding and interpreting a variety of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety standards, directives, spreadsheets, handbooks, and policies
  • Ability to determine the extent of repairs and parts needed; estimates materials required; select best work methods, techniques, and trade practices; and accomplish the repair
  • Ability to select appropriate materials considering such factors as needed strength and hardness, machining characteristics, environmental factors, and the extent to which the materials used could complicate or hamper the use of standard neutralization techniques
  • Measures and cuts materials to the required lengths and dimensions
  • Ability to determine the extent of repairs and parts needed; estimates materials required; select best work methods, techniques, and trade practices; and accomplish the repair. This includes the ability to plan, measure, cut, and lay out materials using typical shop mathematics
  • Skill in the use and application of standard formulas, shop mathematics, trade theories, and industry practices in calculating needed materials and problem solving
  • Skill in understanding and interpreting a variety of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), safety standards, directives, spreadsheets, handbooks, and policies
  • Ability to interpret and understand complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, shop drawings, plans, diagrams, service manuals and building codes of a multi-trade environment
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of test equipment and measuring devices such as levels, feeler gauges, dial indicators, micrometers, tachometers, and calipers to repair, adjust, and test machinery and equipment
  • Fabricates, installs, modifies, overhauls, and performs maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic equipment ranging from equipment of limited complexity such as sub-assemblies, printed circuit cards, and chassis to complete electronics systems
  • Skill and ability to use tools and equipment of the trade such as spray guns, brushes, trowels, screeds, viscosity testers, paint mixers, and other similar equipment
  • Skilled in setting up, adjusting, and operating various wood cutting machines, power tools and hand tools of the trade
  • Knowledge of how to build up, shape, and level surfaces using metal and synthetic resins, plastics, and patching compounds to obtain finely smoothed surfaces with abrasive compounds, pumice, and rottenstone
  • Knowledge of the functions and capabilities of commercially manufactured locking devices, as well as their working interrelationships with a variety of equipment
  • Knowledge of the refrigeration cycle of a variety of systems to make visual, audible and mechanical checks for the proper temperature of conditioned spaces; the proper operation of different parts of the refrigeration cycle; proper oil levels; unusual noises; overheated bearings; loose connections; faulty insulation; frayed or loose belts, gaskets and pulleys; and other similar defects
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and lead team members on day-to-day assignments
  • Ability to provide direction, motivation, and a sense of purpose even though not endowed with supervisory authority
  • Incumbent works alone, with minimal supervision, and provides direction to other tradesmen or lower grade employees with work duties and tasks

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Required: The position requires the incumbent to possess a valid, State Driver's license required to operate a motor vehicle. In addition, if selected for the position, the applicant must provide a copy of their driving record. Please note that applicants should state in their resume that they possess a valid State Driver's license and disclose any incidents/accidents, within the past five (5) years. It is recommended that applicants include in their resume the size and type of vehicles (standard vehicle, trucks, buses) they have operated and how frequently.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic platforms. He/she often works in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped, dirty and hard-to-reach locations. The work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to lift and carry items over 50 pounds. Exposed to a full array of weather conditions. Subject to danger of falling when working from ladders or hydraulic lifts. Exposed to dust/dirt while mixing mortar and handling materials. Work is performed in all areas of the hospital environment, inside and outside. Work is often dirty, dusty and greasy. The incumbent is subjected to such hazardous conditions as injury from power driven tools, falling from scaffolds and ladders, temperature extremes, noise, and bad weather conditions. He/she is frequently exposed to the possibilities of cuts, bruises, scratches, broken bones, and burns. Selectee is subject to asbestos exposure and chemicals which can cause burns or irritation to the skin. Some duties may require incumbent to wear protective equipment and clothing that is heavy and uncomfortable. The tour of duty for this position, will under regular circumstances, be Monday-Friday, 0800-1630 hours. Incumbent may expect to be called upon on very short notice to change their shift to perform related duties or during emergent situations.
