Summary

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. For these vacancies, one position will work from late November through October. The other position will work late December through late November. These positions will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

Clarification from the agency

This position is being filled using the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) local hiring authority (16 USC 3198). Any U.S. Citizen who has acquired special knowledge or expertise regarding the natural or cultural resources of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, by reason of having either lived or worked in or near the unit may apply. See Qualifications section for eligibility requirements.

Duties

This position is located in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve in the Maintenance Division.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform carpentry tasks including repairing and installing building components (doors, windows, trim, cabinets, siding, steps) using standard hand and power tools.
  • Apply paints and stains to interior/exterior surfaces; prepares surfaces; clean and maintain painting tools and equipment.
  • Conduct basic plumbing repairs including replacing fixtures, valves, pipes; cut/thread piping; winterize water systems.
  • Patch and repair various roof types; remove and replace roofing materials to ensure leak-proof, well-drained surfaces.
  • Make basic electrical repairs by replacing or tightening wiring and fixtures using standard electrical tools.
  • Build and set simple concrete forms; mix, pour, place, and finish concrete; repair damaged concrete surfaces.
  • Perform custodial duties (cleaning, trash removal, floor care); assist with labor tasks such as trail work, sign installation, unloading supplies, snow removal, timber work, and drainage clearing.
  • Operate and maintain vehicles, trucks, dump trucks, snow plows, and forklifts; perform minor vehicle maintenance tasks.
  • Operate small watercraft under 26 feet to transport personnel, tools, and materials to work sites.

  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

  • You will be required to operate a small watercraft less than 26 feet in length for non-saltwater operations on lakes and rivers during favorable weather conditions. Operation includes transport of personnel (including visitors), tools, and materials/supplies to job/work sites. In performing this duty, you may be required to obtain a current Department of Interior Motorboat Operator Certification Course (DOI-MOCC) certificate.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.

  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to five nights per month.

  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

  • Eligible for conversion to competitive service after two years and upon meeting all requirements.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 2-year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

This trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. Additional information

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

This is an excepted service appointment, that confers competitive status after two years and upon meeting all performance and OPM qualification requirements.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.
