Duties
As a Utility Systems Repairer-Operator (HVAC Technician), you perform wood crafting, electrical work, painting, masonry, sheet metal, pipefitting, and roofing repairs for the construction, alteration, repair, and technical support of facilities within the zone.
In this position, you will:

Operate, perform predictive and preventive maintenance on, and repair equipment and component parts of refrigeration, air-conditioning, heating, high pressure steam distribution, humidification systems, and boiler systems.

Install, recognize the cause of faulty equipment, and repair, modify and relocate equipment that provides specific and critical conditions in laboratories and special purpose facilities.

Perform maintenance to equipment, make adjustment and repairs to equipment and control systems to ensure proper and efficient operation.

Test, detect and diagnose trouble in heating and air-conditioning systems and take corrective action.

Assure the continuous operation and surveillance of the computers in the Central Control Room, analyze printout data and alarms and assure appropriate remedial actions are taken.

Regularly clean and maintain interiors of all mechanical rooms, air intakes, and all other mechanical equipment and areas.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods.

Additional Conditions of Employment:
This position is for 3rd shift ONLY, 11:00pm-7:30am.
Must be available to work 3rd shift and/or assigned workdays that include holidays, weekends, and call back emergencies.
- Must possess a current EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification. (You must submit a copy with your application)
- Must have a valid State or District of Columbia driver's license. (You must submit a copy with your application)
- Must be available to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

- Ability to do the work of Utility Systems Repairer-Operator without more than the normal supervision.
If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated:
- Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, operations, repair and maintenance (HVAC, electrical, steam).
- Knowledge of HVAC technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic).
- Use of Measuring Instruments.
- Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of Utility System Materials.
Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:
- Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.
- Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.
This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.
