    Duties

    Summary

    The Dental Assistant assists the dentist in many aspects of direct patient care and performs a wide range of clinical and clerical functions.

    Responsibilities

    The duties are but not limited to:

    Chairside Assisting:
    Set up operatory and/or surgery suite for dental procedures and clean dental unit
    Pass instruments
    Keep operative field clear of debris and retracts oral tissues
    Prepare dental medicaments and impression materials
    Assist in specialized dental procedures

    Dental Imaging:
    Expose both standard and specialty dental imaging in traditional and/or digital formats
    Modify settings to achieve the images as requested by the provider

    Infection Control and Equipment Sterilization
    Demonstrate proper infection control procedures in setting up and cleaning operatories
    Prepare instruments for sterilization

    Clerical:
    Assist in filling gaps in the doctor's schedule
    Initiate computerized progress note
    Assist dentist in charting findings and treatment plans in patient records

    Patient Safety:
    Modify care as needed
    Provide instructions to patients
    Monitor patient condition during treatment, being alert for signs of physical distress

    Dental Laboratory Functions:
    Pour impressions and prepare study model
    Make final denture impression trays and prepare bite rims
    Fabricate athletic mouth guards and bleaching trays

    Direct Patient Care:
    Apply topical anesthetic at the injection site
    Apply topical fluoride
    Make impressions for diagnostic casts and preliminary impressions for prosthetic fabrication
    Remove plaque and soft debris from removable prostheses
    Provide patient preventative education and oral hygiene instruction
    Provide post-operative and other appropriate patient education
    Fabricate provisional restorations
    Other duties may be assigned

    Work Schedule: 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
