Summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: This is a Drill Rig Operator WG-5729-10 position with the Omaha Engineering Division, Geotechnical Engr. & Sciences Branch, Geology Section A Drill Crew Unit in Omaha, NE.

Duties

  • Knowledge of core boring drill rigs and auxiliary equipment. Understands and controls drilling parameters such as bit pressure, rotational speed, and rate of penetration in order to maintain borehole stability during drilling.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate operations to meet any routine drilling requirements.
  • Identify and implement safe work practices and select the proper safety equipment to meet site conditions.
  • Safely operates all vehicles necessary for the accomplishment of any drilling assignment in both on-road and off-road situations.
  • Uses both continuous flight and hollow stem augers (HSA's) for standard geo-technical investigations, HTRW investigations for contamination delineation, instrumentation installation, etc.
  • Implement HTRW protocols concerning proper sample collection and handling, decontamination procedures, work zone monitoring, and personal protective equipment.

  • Incumbent is required to obtain/maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 1 year (12 months) of employment.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical.
  • This position is designated as a drug testing position.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 90% of the time.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an DRILL RIG OPERATOR without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform some tasks including drilling techniques on mechanically driven geotechnical drill rigs, such as CME, Diedrich, or Mobile. I have experience in at least 3 of the following: assisting in core drilling operations; assisting in the setting up and operation of auger, cable tool and rotary drilling equipment to obtain samples of soil, rock, etc., for field classification and/or laboratory analysis; assisting in setting up equipment such as leveling machine and setting up mast on drill rig; assembling and disassembling drill rods and core barrels using wrenches and other tools; assisting in removing samples from sample barrels; assisting in maintenance of drilling equipment by cleaning tools and equipment and oiling and greasing parts. I work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who reviews my work for completion.

Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
  • Physical Effort: Work is primarily performed in the field requiring good physical strength and stamina. Work requires standing, walking, or bending most of a work day, frequent and repeated lifting of objects in excess of 60 pounds, use of both hands and feet to operate machinery, good pulmonary function to allow the use of a level C respirator, good balance and coordination, good dexterity for assembling and disassembling drill pipe, and tolerance of heat and cold.
  • Working Conditions: Work is conducted in the field up to 90% of the time. During these assignments, subjected to conditions that are very hot and cold, wet, dusty, icy, muddy, and windy. Also exposed to biological hazards such as biting insects, snakes, poison ivy, etc. Significant amount of work at HTRW sites where chemical contaminates are present and personal protective equipment is required. Grease, oil, and other lubricants as well as fuels are present during operation, maintenance and repair of equipment and accessories.
