    Duties Summary

    This position is located in the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), Manufacturing Directorate, Office of Production Engineering (OPE), Development Engineering Division (DED).  This position reports to the Division Manager/Supervisory Electrical Engineer. The primary purpose of the position is building engineering prototypes of optical and electro mechanical systems involved in the engineering development work of the Office.

    The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

    • Manage the operation of an optics and engineering lab.
    • Build and debug engineering prototype systems safely and securely without damage to personnel or equipment.
    • Build electrical control panels for prototype designs, based on standard industrial practices and regulatory codes.
    • Provide comprehensive management advisory and technical services on substantive functions and practices.
    • Maintain the equipment in the engineering prototype laboratory.

    Specialized experience: For the GS-12, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:

    • Supporting engineers with technical design and development of manufacturing equipment or engineering systems; AND
    • Monitoring and evaluating machinery and/or equipment to ensure correct performance.

    Specialized experience: For the GS-11, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: 

    • Supporting engineers with technical design and development of manufacturing equipment or engineering systems.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 
    - A one year probationary period may be required.

    Rating: Your application will be evaluated in the following areas: Technical, Project Management, Systems and Technology, and Communication. If qualified, you will be assigned to one of three quality level categories, Gold, Silver, and Bronze depending on your responses to the online questions, regarding your experience, education, and training related to this position. A subject matter expert may be used in the evaluation.
