The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a dispatcher in the 911-dispatch center, responsible for effective emergency communications support and information. Responsible for the fire department's emergency response force by determining what equipment needs to respond to aircraft, structural, hazardous materials, and medical emergencies.
- Dispatches emergency response forces in accordance with the department's response procedure and the Base Disaster Preparedness Plan
- Maintains and operates equipment in the fire alarm 911 dispatch center
- Maintains appropriate and relative documents, regulations, operational instructions, technical orders, maps, charts and checklist.
- Obtains and relays vital information relative to management of emergency Incidents/accidents
- Operates the civil Engineer group service call function after administrative duty hours, on weekends and holidays

- Required to work an uncommon tour of duty, including nights and weekends. The hours will be 40 hours per week or 80 hours per pay period (two weeks)

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-04, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience are: knowledge of various vehicles in order to dispatch the appropriate firefighting/rescue vehicles, Skill in operating complex communication systems such as multi line telephones, two way radios, or public address systems; Skill in communicating effectively orally, experience in reading grid maps that reflect such items as electrical, water, or gas systems. Knowledge of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and technical orders. Due to the use of 120 day rosters, this period of experience may be completed within 120 days of the closing date of this announcement.
EDUCATION: have successfully completed four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. NOTE: You must submit a copy of official transcripts.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-04 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-05 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. Due to the use of 120 day rosters, applicants within 120 days of completion of the TIG required are encouraged to apply.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA's): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of various types of assigned vehicles in order to dispatch appropriate firefighting/ rescue vehicles
2.Skill in researching and retrieving information quickly and efficiently from various hazardous material guidebook, using chemical name of Department of Transportation (DOT) identification numbers.
3. Basic knowledge of and ability to use computers.
4. Familiar with the disaster preparedness emergency response plan, firefighting techniques, equipment capability, various types of structures, mutual aid agreements/department capabilities
5.Skill in operating complex communication systems such as multi-line telephones, two way radios, alarm equipment public address systems and voice recording equipment
6. Skill and ability in communicating effectively orally, using tact and courtesy
7. Ability to maintain appropriate and relative documents, regulations, operational instructions, technical orders, maps charts and checklist located within the 911-dispatch center.
8. Ability to read grid maps which reflect such systems as electrical, water, gas, central heating distribution, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, and pollution control
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
