Summary
An FBI Gunsmith serves as a technical expert and Instructor in the field of firearms technology. They coordinate and direct the design, planning, construction, maintenance, and alteration of arms, firearms, and equipment. They also participate in ongoing investigations as the subject matter expert on weapons, as well as working with numerous weapons systems, optics and lasers, both foreign and domestic.

Duties
GS 11:
- Determines operating and maintenance requirements, forecast resource requirements, parts ordering, and evaluates program effectiveness through inspections.
- Makes technical and mechanical analyses/evaluations of newly developed or experimental weapons and other law enforcement or military equipment referred to FBI.
- Researches manuals, articles, guidelines, blueprints and sketches to remain current with technological changes affecting the gunsmith trade.
- Interprets, modifies, and applies available guidelines to specific problems or issues.
- Analyzes and solves a variety of conventional problems or issues involving one or more types or categories of equipment or services.
GS 12:
- Serves as an FBI Gunsmith, technical expert and Instructor in the field of firearms technology.
- Performs diagnostic inspection, repair, preventive maintenance, and preparation of various weapons including rifles, carbines, shotguns, sub-machine guns, handguns, and gas guns.
- Researches and procures parts and accessories to perform detailed weapon repairs and testing as well as function fires and sights in all weapons prepared.
- Performs refinishing and repairs such as cutting, fitting and gauging barrels, cutting chambers, adjusting head space and hand fitting parts to factory tolerances.
- Develops and conducts instructional courses related to disassembly/assembly, cleaning, maintenance, and repair of a variety of weapons.
- Communicates with commercial vendors in addition to local, state, and federal law enforcement entities.
Conditions of Employment
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must be able to obtain a Top Secret clearance.
- Must have (or be able to obtain) a valid driver's license.
- Some domestic and/or international travel may be required.
Applicants must complete a practicum application which will be part of the interview process. To complete the practicum, you will be required to travel to Quantico, Virginia, at your own expense.
Qualifications
GS- 11: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS- 9 grade level. SE is defined as follows:
- Performing all types of repairs and modifications to small arms used in law enforcement and most commercially available firearms including rifles, carbines, shotguns, sub-machine guns, handguns, and gas guns.
- Possessing gunsmith level of expertise in weaponry, above-average level of interior and exterior ballistics expertise, and expert level of shooting ability.
- Appling machine shop procedures, techniques and shop mathematics, as well as skilled workmanship in planning, laying out, machining, assembling, hand fitting and finishing work to precise dimensions and close tolerances.
- Communicating verbally and in writing to provide instruction and information regarding all aspects of gunsmithing.
GS- 12: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-11.
SE is defined as follows:
- Performing all types of repairs and modifications to small arms used in law enforcement and most commercially available firearms including rifles, carbines, shotguns, sub-machine guns, handguns, and gas guns.
- Possessing gunsmith level of expertise in weaponry, above-average level of interior and exterior ballistics expertise, and expert level of shooting ability.
- Appling machine shop procedures, techniques and shop mathematics, as well as skilled workmanship in planning, laying out, machining, assembling, hand fitting and finishing work to precise dimensions and close tolerances.
- Communicating verbally and in writing to provide instruction and information regarding all aspects of gunsmithing.
- Exercises initiative, resourcefulness and professional expertise in researching, developing and implementing new courses, determining specific topics to be taught, types of material to be included, how the course is organized and degree of relevance of each aspect of course being taught.
Applicants must demonstrate in their resume experience in the following weapons: Glock pistols, Remington shotguns, and Colt pattern rifles/carbines.
Education
All degrees must be from an accredited college or university. Education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows:
GS-11: Applicant must have a Ph.D. OR equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.M., if related.
Education may NOT be substituted for Specialized Experience at the GS 12 or higher-grade level.
