DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.205) for this occupation.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide Health Care aid at the Health Care System VISN and facility levels. The position is responsible for delivering a broad array of health care services throughout the Medical Center, and its various locations that provide in patient care, such as but not limited to the living centers.

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Uses and follows proper hand hygiene, universal precautions and general infection control principles.
- Screening of all individuals both staff and Veterans who enter VA facilities that include CBOC/PCC and VAMC.
- Validates both staff and Veterans temperature before allowing into VA facility.
- Provides directions and answers general questions while serving as a Wayfinder in the VA facility.
- Notifies triage Nurse when unable to authorize patient entry into clinical areas and directs patient to waiting area for further triage.
- Directs traffic as needed and provides vehicle screening-advising drivers where to park.
- Assists as needed with transferring, and escorting inpatients/residents.
- Maintains general cleanliness of the waiting and sitting areas.
- Carries records, reports, laboratory specimens, x-rays, prosthetic equipment and patient prescriptions to designated areas, excluding control substance.
- Establishes and promotes effective interpersonal relationships and communications with inpatients/residents, families and others.
- Responds to inpatients/residents' family members', visitors,' and co-workers' requests for assistance promptly and in a friendly cooperative manner.
- Wears VA name badge above waist at all times.
- Reports observations of the condition of acute and chronic phase patients such as excessive vomiting, bleeding, type and amount of drainage, skin integrity, patency of airway, etc.
- Makes follow-up call to patients as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Will Vary per Location, All shifts available. Shifts are mostly ten hour shifts and include weekends. Subject to work irregular tours of duty, and holidays.

GS-03 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-02 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience at the GS-3 level includes:
- 6 months of general work experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
- Successful completion of one year of study that includes study in medical or health-related fields (Transcripts must be uploaded.).
- Combination of experience and education (please see below for more information).
To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-03. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position. A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing, with minor bending, lifting and pushing. The work may include carrying different sizes and weights of items. The work also requires agility and dexterity to navigate a wheelchair and handle papers, books, charts, boxes of copier paper and medical supplies.. Working with residents requires regular and recurring bending, lifting (not to exceed 35 pounds), reaching, carrying, stooping, stretching and similar activities.
