About the Position: This position is with the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, 404th Army Field Support Brigade, Logistics Readiness Center, Maintenance Division, Inspection and Quality Assurance Branch, located in Fort Hunter Liggett, California.
Duties
- Select and comply with technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides to make repairs and modifications to equipment.
- Select best work methods to find and correct mechanical defects. Repair and replace wiring; remove, test, repair, and replace defective assemblies and parts.
- Inspect and test equipment and units which will not operate or operate improperly.
- Receive oral or written work orders from the shop foreman. Select work methods, tools, and manuals to independently complete work assignments.
- Synchronize remote or manual electrical and hydraulic controls, and set timing of magnetos, distributors, injectors, and injection pumps to engine specifications.
- Perform the full range of overhaul and repair work on heavy-duty mobile equipment and vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.
- Perform repairs on equipment such as construction, industrial, combat equipment, bulldozers, front end loaders, hydraulic lifts, tracked combat vehicles, etc.
- Utilize a wide variety of test equipment such as engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, vacuum and fuel pump testers, injector testers, ignition timers, tachometers, voltmeters, and gauges.
- Traces circuits, checks control boxes, generators, distributors, motors, magnetos, and coils as well as magnetic hydraulic and pneumatic actuated electrical controls.
- Perform work measuring, fitting, and installing components, such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears and cylinders to specified clearances.
Conditions of Employment
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
- This position requires the incumbent must obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 1 year of entrance on duty.
- This position is subject to mandatory drug testing as required to maintain a CDL.
- This position requires a pre-employment medical examination and annually thereafter.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic (Automotive)~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common maintenance, troubleshooting, modification, and repairs to heavy mobile equipment and vehicles powered by internal combustion engines (gasoline, butane, diesel, or multi-fuel). I can assist a journey worker in preparing the work area by getting tools and supplies, carrying materials, and lifting and holding material in place during installation. I have operated simple hand tools to remove parts. I have cleared work area of debris and kept tools clean and lubricated. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

- Physical Effort: Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing and crouching. Sometimes work on top of and under vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds, and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools.
- Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside. Frequently exposed to drafts, noise, dust, heat, fumes and hard floors or ground. Typically works on parts which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Possibility of cuts, burns, bruises or sprains. Exposed to burns and skin irritation from welding operations, acids, fluids, and lubricants. Wears protective clothing and equipment as necessary.
