    This position is located in the Department of Labor, Office of Administrative Law Judges, Boston, MA.  This position has promotion potential to GS-8. There is no obligation to provide future promotions to you if you are selected. Future promotions are dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and supervisory approval.  This position is inside bargaining unit. Depending on the agency's needs more than one selection may be made from this vacancy announcement.

    Duties include but are not limited to the following: Receiving and examining case files; determining which statutes apply and the time limitations for hearing and processing the case. Studying, analyzing, and conducting detailed analysis of case file contents. Organizing and maintaining a filing system; and determining if further evidentiary documentation or legal actions are needed. Developing and preparing materials and statements for formal hearings; preparing pre-hearing synopses and/or reports of cases. Responding to pre-hearing and post-hearing requests for subpoenas for parties to secure evidence and develop testimony; responding to receipt of FOIA requests by reviewing case files, copying documents and forwarding information in accordance with the statute. Preparing pre and post-hearing letters to the parties and orders in response to motions or pleadings and in accordance with the judge's policy, may independently grant telephonic motions and requests such as extension of time, continuances and claimants' request for decisions on the record, etc. Conducting legal research to assist the Administrative Law Judges or Attorneys, including checking legal citations for accuracy and completeness. Obtaining, reviewing, and summarizing statutes; defining proceedings; reviewing needed sections of the Rules of Administrative Procedures and Federal Rules of Evidence to provide information on an issue and the latest Benefits Review Board and Court Rulings. Administrative duties include: Reading incoming mail, maintaining a follow-up system to ensure the necessary actions are taken in a timely manner. Preparing correspondence/replies based on own knowledge or oral direction; maintaining Judge's calendar.  Make travel arrangements, prepare Travel Authorizations and Travel Vouchers using Agency travel management system, as well as arranging for court room space and court reporters for all hearings. Reviewing and analyzing motions for attorney fees; independently researching appropriate statutes and regulations; determining reasonableness of fees. Computing correct fees and determining final fee granted; and preparing orders stipulating allowable fees.  Reviewing proposed settlement agreements and preparing appropriate orders.  Uses a variety of software and web-based programs to produce documents, spreadsheets, reports, charts, graphs and travel vouchers, including but not limited to OALJ case tracking and document management system (CTS/DMS) to effectively manage case files.
