Under the supervision of an RN and/or MD/DO the GS-7 LPN/LVN successfully and consistently demonstrates the exercise of independent technical judgment (without the need for readily available supervision), as well as a comprehensive and thorough working knowledge of the most complex or difficult practices and procedures. Such individuals may also serve as leaders or co-leaders in a nursing unit or for a specifically identified group of patients.

The LPN-7 in Imaging will possess knowledge and understanding of general anatomy and physiology with specific advanced understanding of the venous and integumentary systems. It is required to recognize how alterations in these systems affect the patient process during imaging studies. The incumbent will also possess the ability to make accurate and independent judgments based on patient needs and utilize prioritization skills in performing all duties required. Skill in selecting the most appropriate application of procedures and accurately reporting and recording significant patient information is necessary. The incumbent will demonstrate the ability to use a practical knowledge of human behavior, motivation, and reactions to situations while working with patients, family and other staff members.
The LPN-7 in Imaging will oversee initiating IVs for patients prior to CT and MRI studies using appropriate gauge needles for administration of IV contrast. Utilize ultrasound for guided IV starts when necessary. Check and draw labs appropriately as well as assess for additional labs that can be drawn. Maintain competency and utilize point of care testing when appropriate. Safely access and de-access Ports for Veterans following VHAPOR nursing policy. Dispense oral contrast agents per physician order to patients scheduled for imaging studies requiring oral contrast. Monitor patients in the Imaging inpatient holding area and triage for safety and wellbeing. Triage includes an overview of systems: neurological, psychosocial, physiological including airway, circulation and pain, checking and responding to vital signs when necessary. The LPN provides ongoing triage for the length of stay in the Imaging Department to monitor for acute changes in status. Overs.ee patient flow through the Imaging inpatient holding area and recognize patients that may require expedited exams and transport.Follow Professional Nursing Policies and Procedures as they relate to patient care.
