This position is located within Nursing Service at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. The VA Medical Center is located in the heart of West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle on 175 acres in historic Berkeley County. The Medical Center offers a comprehensive range of services, including internal medicine, ambulatory surgery, audiology and speech pathology, dental, nursing home, nutrition, podiatry, prosthetics, women’s health, mental health, and rehabilitation medicine. Patient Care is provided through an integrated primary care concept, and each veteran is assigned to a team of health care providers who follow the patient’s care both as an inpatient and an outpatient. The Medical Center has a service area of nearly 130,000 veterans in West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

The Medical Center operates seven VA-staffed Outpatient Clinics in Cumberland, Hagerstown, and Frederick, Maryland, Stephens City and Harrisonburg, Virginia and Franklin and Petersburg, West Virginia. Primary Care and Mental Health care are provided at these Community Based Outpatient Clinics.


 As part of a self-directed work team, the Shahbaz is expected to work with the resident and interdisciplinary team in an autonomous role without constant and direct supervision.

This is the full performance level for NAs.  NAs at this grade level function as a member of the nursing care team and assist licensed nursing staff in the care of residents in the Community Living Center setting.  The distinguishing factor is that resident assignments typically involve more complex nursing needs which can vary within a range of predictable to unpredictable requirements.  NAs at this level also assume more of a peer education/mentorship role.  Functions independently within their given assignment under routine supervision.

Duties include, but are not limited to are: 

Support duties for diagnostic service, treatments, customer service, resident charting, and teaching, and other duties outlined below:

Prepares, cooks, and serves food as determined by resident preferences within context of VA regulations; has general knowledge of foods appropriate for simple modifications of regular diets. Maintains the kitchen area in a high degree of orderliness and cleanliness; checks bulk food deliveries with menus to ensure correct amounts of all items are available for meals, reporting discrepancies; checks types of serving utensils and dishes needed; directs/assists with serving of foods for both regular and modified diets, using appropriate portion control, while receiving advice from Dietitians as needed. Removes soiled dishes, separates food waste and trash, prewashes/washes dishes in mechanical dishwasher; stores dishes/pans/kitchen equipment safely and appropriately.

Empties trash and waste baskets, replacing liners. Transports refuse and trash to the established collection point. Replenishes supplies of paper towels, toilet paper, and soap in all designated areas. Cleans restrooms, bathrooms, and shower rooms to meet standards. Cleans glass doors, windows and window ledges, mirrors, cabinet and countertops. Launders and distributes residents' personal clothing. Light dusting and spot cleaning of furniture, surfaces and floors.

Actively collaborate with Restorative Care Nursing RN Lead and provide restorative care needs as needed and as instructed to ensure optimal resident physical function and to prevent physical decline. 

Actively collaborate with Recreation Therapist in providing meaningful resident recreation therapy and house activities that promote overall resident well being.

The Shahbaz recognizes individuality among residents and varies the nursing care accordingly. Must have a thorough knowledge of food storage, meal preparation and serving, diet restrictions, individual dietary recommendations, HACCP guidelines, infection control, specialized cleaning tasks, and materials/agents and equipment for cleaning, and be capable of learning and applying ever changing procedures regarding infection control and improved cleaning equipment received through formal and informal training.
