This Job Opportunity Announcement will be used to fill one (1) Staff Physician, VM-0602 position for Geriatric Primary Care Clinic with Geriatric and Extended Care Service at Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System.
This open & continuous announcement that will remain open until filled. The 1st review will be Friday, February 12, 2021; then weekly.
Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay)

Serves as Staff Physician with Geriatric Primary Services to provide primary care to elderly veterans in Geriatric (Primary Care) with limited coverage of the New Horizon Community Living Center. Physicians in Geriatrics are independent care providers who are highly skilled in the management of a patient's primary care needs or subspecialty evaluation and treatment. The incumbent will remain up to date with the latest medical treatments and procedures. CAVHCS places great emphasis on the delivery and continuity of Geriatrics Extended Care & Rehabilitation.
- Provide clinical coverage in outpatient GPC clinics.
- Provide limited cross coverage for Home Based Primary Care, Community Living Center, Spinal Cord Injury.
- Serves as a key clinical resource for matters involving Geriatric services.
- Serves as Staff Physician with Spinal Cord Injury Services.
- Provides comprehensive care for our veteran population such as diagnosis, care, and treatment of assigned patients.
- Provides effective medical treatment, consultation, and diagnosis upon request from other Services/Departments.
- Orders lab tests, x-rays, EKG's and other diagnostic procedures Initiates or expedites requests for consults, special tests, or studies.
- Provide continuity of care and coordinate clinical services
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

- Education. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

for the year in which the degree was granted, or
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association https://steopathic.org/accreditation/ fr the year in which the degree was granted.

- NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
- Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
- Residency Training. Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are:
- These approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) https://www.acgme.rg/ r American Osteopathic Association (AOA) https://steopathic.org/, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
- Other residencies r their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.
Preferred Experience: Board Certification
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
Physical Requirements: : Moderate lifting, pulling, and carrying. Must be able to walk, stand, and bend for 2-4 hours per day. Able to distinguish between basic colors. Hearing (aid permitted). Good interpersonal skills, working closely with others. Use of fingers for 6-7 hours per day.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
