    This announcement is for one (1) position as the Chief of Geriatrics and Extended Care, and will act as its Service Line Manager for the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System. This position will be located at either the Leavenworth (Dwight D. Eisenhower) Campus or the Topeka (Colmery O'Neil) Campus, with travel between the two facilities being required.

    Responsibilities

    Duties include but are not limited to the following:

    • The Chief of Geriatrics and Extended Care is responsible for overall operation, oversight and performance measures of all Geriatrics and Extended Care operations at the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System
    • Responsibilities include planning, developing and directing administrative and clinic functions of the Geriatrics and Extended Care service.
    • Candidates must possess the skills to interact positively with the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System's leadership team to lead and promote staff excellence, staff development, with experience in an academic setting.
    • This position provides administrative, clinical, and programmatic leadership for the service to ensure achieved performance measures
    • Oversight of Community Living Centers (sub-acute rehabilitation, hospice, and memory care services), Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Audiology, Recreation Therapy, Hospice and Palliative Care programs, Geriatric Primary Care Services (GeriPACT), Pain Management, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services, and includes clinical practice and oversight responsibility for residents
    • .The position reports directly to the Chief of Staff and serves as a clinical resource for the Executive Leadership Team. Outstanding interpersonal skills are essential, as the successful candidate will lead a multidisciplinary staff in the delivery of excellent health care to our nation's Veterans.
    • The Chief of Geriatrics and Extended Care will be expected to practice within their medical specialty no less than 20% of their total time, in addition to fulfilling administrative responsibilities, be on call, as well as take calls.
    • The qualified candidate is board-certified, and in good standing, with the American Board of Medical Specialties in Geriatrics or PM&R. Incumbent will maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

    Qualifications
    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/28/2019.
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

    Preferred Experience:
    • Board Certification in Geriatrics or PM&R
    • Recent experience of 2 years or more of Leadership.

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (6 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted).
