    Education and length of practice will be considered through a formal pay-setting process in determining the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay).

    VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System is recruiting a full-time Orthopedic Surgeon to provide a full range of Orthopedic services to our Veterans. This position is located at the Leavenworth division, however the incumbent will be expected to provide Orthopedic support to the Topeka division as well. Travel between campuses will be required. Major duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Participate in and/or manages all aspects of a general orthopedic surgery program, to include inpatient and outpatient clinical, administrative, academic, and research components if warranted.
    • Must be able to perform arthroscopic surgeries - scoped interventions of the hip a plus
    • Perform administrative duties related to patient care management including: entering progress notes, histories and physicals, discharge summaries, consults, etc.
    • Utilize electronic medical records
    • Work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team including Nursing, Anesthesiology, Podiatry, Mid-Level Surgical Providers, Residents and medical support staff to ensure prompt and efficient delivery of patient care services.
    • Provide supervision to Orthopedic Mid-Level providers and Surgical Residents
    • Service on service level and hospital committees as needed and participate in the facility peer review program.

    Work Schedule: Primarily Monday-Friday Day Shift; will be required to participate in on-call rotation.

    Qualifications
    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/09/2020.

    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Physical requirements outlined below.
    Preferred Experience: Board Certification/Board Eligibility in Orthopedic Surgery is highly desired. Orthopedic Surgeons must have current ACLS and BLS certification.

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (6 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted).
