    Physician serving as the Associate Director for Clinical in the Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical (GRECC) program of the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Healthcare System.

    Responsibilities

    Administrative:
    1. Provide supervisory support for all the clinical activities of GRECC providers at the Seattle and the American Lake divisions of VA Puget Sound.
    2. Ensure there are an adequate number of, sufficient variety of, and suitable supply of faculty resources for geriatrics and gerontology-focused clinical educational opportunities for GRECC trainees, geriatrics fellows, and medical residents working in GRECC programs.
    3. Raise visibility of GRECC clinical activities and contributions.
    4. Act as "Ambassador" for the GRECC program within the larger VA system.
    5. Participate in the monthly calls of the ADs for C or delegating a proxy when unable to participate.
    6. Seek out and act upon opportunities to collaborate with other GRECC ADs for C, their programs and personnel.
    7. Responsible for development of the clinical section of the GRECC annual report and any site visits.
    Clinical:

    1. Responsible for at least one GRECC clinical demonstration project each academic year with associated clinic for a total of one half day per week or its equivalent throughout the academic year.
    2. Provide clinical supervision and teaching to fellows, residents and UW medical students, and be responsible for clinical care of patients while serving as an attending physician on the teaching service of the Community Living Center (Geriatrics & Extended Care service) for a total of one month each academic year.
    Teaching & Training:
    1. Participate in local, regional and national GRECC educational programs for physicians, fellows, residents, nurses, psychologists, rehabilitation specialists, pharmacists, social workers and other associated health professionals.
    2. Participate in the teaching and training programs of his/her associated department(s) at the University of Washington School of Medicine, including those targeted to local and regional practitioners and research and clinical trainees.
    Research:
    1. Collaborate with the Associate Directors for Research and Education & Evaluation in the development and implementation of novel clinical protocols relevant to the older Veteran population.
    2. Provide leadership in identifying, developing, securing support for, conducting, and evaluating clinical demonstration projects (exportable models of care aimed at improving the health and well-being of older Veterans).
    3. Develop clinical programs, including long-term care, based on local and regional needs.
    4. Produce written reports of work accomplished that are suitable for publication in appropriate peer-reviewed journals.

    Qualifications
    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/01/2020.
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

    Preferred Experience: Experience in geriatric medicine

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements: This position will require walking, standing or sitting for periods of up to or beyond 10-12 hours per day. Prolonged periods of sitting while performing procedures, prolonged use of hands in delivery of clinical treatment and in operating computer mouse and keyboard. In addition, the incumbent will need to bend, lift and turn.
