The San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS) 1A unit is an Oncology-Hematology, Medical-Surgical, Telemetry unit that is aligned under Hospital Care Services. Specialized in Hematology and Oncology, 1A provides acute care services to veterans with a diverse range of medical or surgical conditions. The unit also provides telemetry monitoring for patients requiring cardiac monitoring, but do not meet criteria for intensive care or step-down level of care.

1A Registered Nurses are accountable for the delivery of quality nursing care for the patients processed in the medical center. The responsibility includes but is not limited to: assessing, planning, and directing appropriate care and creating an environment that promotes, stimulates, and fosters good customer service, personnel growth and satisfaction.
Duties include but are not limited to:
* Provides leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.
* Manages complex patient situations.
* Exercise good customer service level to internal and external clientele.
* Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care.
* Assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and properly document care based on medical-surgical and age-specific components.
* Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction.
* Considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences in the provision of care.
* Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.
* Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.
* Assumes leadership responsibilities at the patient and unit levels.
* Uphold best and evidence-based practices to render safe and quality care to veterans by complying and keeping abreast through unit or facility-based trainings and education.
* Demonstrates leadership at the unit level, including functioning as Charge Nurse and the ability to delegate appropriately.
* Utilizes critical thinking skills and the nursing process to provide care for patients from cardiac, surgical, medical and oncological specialties.
Work Schedule: Intermittent, shift work, weekends, days, evenings, nights and holidays.
The Intermittent RN is expected to float to different areas based on their competency and work different tours or rotating shifts.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN
) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE
). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: Completion of Chemo-Bio certification course is preferred. ACLS/BLS required.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
- Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing, frequent bending and stooping, walking, reaching, and repetitive motion. Heavy Lifting (45 lbs. and over); Heavy Carrying (45 lbs. and over); Straight Pulling (up to 1 hour); Pushing (1 - 2 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 3 hours); Standing (up to 3 hours); Repeated bending (up to 1 hour); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Hearing (aid permitted). The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing, keyboarding, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes-noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
