Summary
The incumbent will be assigned to the Cropping Systems and Water Quality Research Unit, located in Columbia, MO. The incumbent will conduct modeling studies to develop a self-learning system that runs the Agricultural Policy and Environmental Extender (APEX) model in the cloud using local field information to simulate and predict crop yields and water, sediment, and nutrient fluxes from crop fields.

Duties
- Develop a self-learning system that runs the Agricultural Policy and Environmental Extender model in the cloud using local field information to simulate and predict crop yields and water, sediment, and nutrient fluxes from crop fields.
- Using modeling techniques, machine learning, and remote sensed data, the incumbent will 1) determine how select model parameters vary with system variables and climate, and
- 2) incorporate these relationships into APEX and assess the impacts of these adjustments on model results.

Qualifications
This position requires a recent Ph.D (within the last 4 years) in hydrology, biological engineering, soil and crop sciences, applied mathematics, geography, or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. The ability to understand FORTRAN 77 and write and troubleshoot codes using other scientific programming languages; and good writing and presentation skills. Knowledge of current methods used in eco-hydrologic modeling, machine learning, and remote sensing is highly desirable.

Individual Occupational Requirements
Basic Requirements:
- Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels.

- Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
