Duties

This position performs carpentry repairs of limited difficulty to buildings and quarters. Constructs, installs, repairs, and replaces such items as doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, trim and cabinets. Uses simple measuring devices such as tape measures and square; and hand and power tools such as hammers, bars, handsaws, screw drivers, squares, skill saws, jug saws, routers, hand-belt sanders and drills.
Performs plumbing repairs of limited difficulty such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replaces faucet washers; unplugs drains using a plunger; replaces liquid petroleum gas bottles. Utilizes a variety of materials, tools, and equipment associated with the plumbing trade. On projects of limited difficulty patches and repairs roofs. Uses hand tools related to roofing repairs such as brooms, scrapers, ladders, square shovels, trowels, knives, and spreaders. Work is performed with specific instruction from supervisor or higher graded employee.
Performs routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances. The incumbent will be required to navigate small vessels and fleet under challenging weather and navigational conditions daily. The incumbent will report to their primary work location at Harkers Island, NC and travel 10 miles (one-way) across open water to Great Island (GI) on South Core Banks (SCB) which are both part of Cape Lookout National Seashore. The use of All Terrain Vehicles, Utility Task Vehicles, mowers, and tractors will be required. Additionally, GI and SCB are remotely located with no readily available medical services and no ability to purchase food or supplies. The area consists of harsh conditions with no climate-controlled areas during summer and winter when temperatures can range between 15 and 100 degrees. Additionally, the incumbent will be exposed to biting insects such as mosquitoes, horseflies, blackflies, and spiders.
Area Information:
Cape Lookout National Seashore (CALO) preserves 56 miles of North Carolina's Southern Outer Banks which includes a lighthouse, wild horses, and two historic villages. Most of CALO is located on four barrier islands accessible only by boat. Park offices, with beautiful waterfront views of Core sound, are located on Harkers Island which is connected to the mainland by roads and bridges. Harkers Island and other nearby small surrounding communities have a variety of residences for rent or sale where basic services and elementary schools are available. The historic town of Beaufort (population of 4,199 census 2016) and Morehead City (population of 9,402 census 2016) have all the necessary conveniences including a hospital, high schools, and a community college. North Carolina's Crystal Coast is a popular tourist destination location offering a wide variety of year-round recreational opportunities including fishing, boating, swimming, and golfing. It is an area that has fantastic sunrises and sunsets, friendly people, commercial fishing, and fresh seafood.
