Summary

The A/C Equipment Mechanic Leader serves as a working lead to 13 WG-5306-10 A/C
Equipment Mechanics on multiple shifts overseeing, assigning, and prioritizing work
involving installing, recognizing the cause of faulty equipment, repairing, modifying, and
relocating equipment on various special purpose air conditioning units within the Facilities Management Service
within the Philadelphia VA Medical Center and Outpatient Clinics and reports directly to the
A/C Equipment Mechanic Supervisor.

Duties

Duties Include:

  • Provides troubleshooting assistance if needed and training to lower grade personnel. Assumes associated responsibilities of the A/C Equipment Mechanic Supervisor in their absence.
  • Maintains critical parts inventory to ensure faulty equipment is repaired with in a timely manner.
  • Serves as the Building Automation System administrator, creating user profiles, modifying the system, creating alarms, creating alarm notification, and ensuring that someone from with in the Air Conditioning Shop is monitoring alarms and responded appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Provide specific and critical climatic conditions and ensuring completion of all work in a timely matter. Equipment primary consists of Chillers, Cooling Towers, Air Handlers, Pumps, Fan Coil Units, Air Compressors, Exhaust Fans, Variable Frequency Drives, Water Fountains, Walk in Refrigeration, Reach in Refrigeration, Rooftop Package Units, Window Units, Ductless Mini Split Units, Vestibule Heaters, Air Curtain Units, Split Systems, Airborne Isolation Fans, Humidifiers, Ice Machines, Motor Starters, Variable Air Volume Boxes, and Building Automation System (Metasys).
  • Repair and overhaul work require a knowledge of construction characteristics of various types and models of systems that are designed to reach and maintain critical and extreme conditions under a variety of circumstances. Work may include electrical, motor repairs, compressor repairs, pipe fitting, insulating, fabricating sheet metal, and HVAC controls for all the systems listed above. System designs are most often one of a kind requiring the ability to understand fundamental engineering concepts such as air flow, pressure, temperature, mechanics, and thermal dynamics to properly repair, tune and calibrate systems and equipment as required.
  • Use basic hand tools and specialty tools associated with the trade. For example, Recovery Machine, Refrigerant Scales, Vacuum Pumps, Refrigerant Gauges, Micron Gauge, Air Flow Metering Devices, Multi Meter, Digital Thermometers, Nitrogen Gauge, Oxygen and Acetylene Torches, and Laser Alignment Tool.

Physical Requirements: The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Leader works inside and outside for extended
periods in cramped, dark, damp, hot, cold, dusty, noisy, and dangerous conditions including
on roof tops during periods of inclement weather, in interstitial spaces, walk in coolers, inside
large air conditioning equipment, and mechanic rooms, etc. The incumbent works around
multiple sources of dangerous energy sources.
