Summary

This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. ARTs are part of the regular career civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service. In addition, ARTs are required to maintain their active membership in the AF Reserve unit where assigned. ARTs receive on average one weekend of military training per month.

Duties

The primary purpose of this position is: to serve as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) involved in the installing, troubleshooting, interrogating, programing/reprograming, adjusting, testing, modifying, calibrating, and repairing of complex integrated aircraft electrical and environmental systems and equipment on board conventional/nuclear certified aircraft supported by the organization and to provide training to and evaluation of all assigned personnel, e.g., Active Duty, Reservist, Civilians, Contractors and foreign military as required in the accomplishment of duties set forth herein.

DUTIES:
Duty 1 - Performs troubleshooting of complex integrated electrical/environmental systems of related on/off equipment for assigned and/or transient aircraft to include support equipment.
Duty 2 - Installs, inspects, modifies, repairs, services, replaces, adjusts and overhauls complex integrated electrical/ environmental systems, both on and off equipment, to include, but not limited to: oxygen, fire suppression, air conditioning, pressurization, ice/rain protection, bleed air systems, avionics cooling systems, cargo/mission handling, missile interface units/bomb doors, anti-skid systems, landing gear, ignition, stall warning, flight control, AC/DC power supply and distribution, Integrated Drive Generator, fuel and explosive systems.
Duty 3 - Performs final functional and operational tests of complex integrated electrical/ environmental systems, both on and off equipment.
Duty 4 - Prepares/executes effective training plans to maximize training for all assigned personnel, e.g., Active Duty, Reservist, Civilians, Contractors and foreign military.
Duty 5 - Utilizes safety practices and tool control procedures following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work area. Document recommends methods to improve equipment performance, technical data, and maintenance procedures by reporting malfunctions, initiating product quality deficiency reports both on equipment and in technical data, and assists in design changes as necessary.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C for WG-2800 Electrical Installation And Maintenance Family.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the ???????WG-2800 Electrical Installation And Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is: the ability to perform the work of an AIRCRAFT ELECTRICIAN (AIRCRAFT PNEUDRAULIC SYSTEMS MECHANIC) with little to no supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
  1. Knowledge of assigned shop and trade practices. Ability to follow appropriate work practices including keeping a tidy, clean, and orderly work area Comprehensive knowledge of the electrical theory, principles, and circuitry and instruments used in shop and trade practices and a knowledge of aircraft electrical systems and their relationships.
  2. Ability to apply technical practices in the performance of assigned work. Knowledge of electronic principles in order to recognize types and sizes of resistors, capacitors, wiring, and transistors. Knowledge of the interface of electrical or environmental systems with hydraulic, electronic armament, instrument, and mechanical systems and assemblies.
  3. Comprehensive knowledge of testing and troubleshooting techniques and procedures utilizing a variety of test devices and ability to analyze, modify, and repair complex electrical or environmental systems and components on assigned aircraft.
  4. Skill in installing, relocating, and repositioning electrical and electronic components and wiring to facilitate installation of equipment. Ability to lay-out connecting circuits and make connections in order to prevent equipment or circuit overload or malfunction.
  5. Skill in calibrating and adjusting components such as amplifiers, proximity boxes, generators, and voltage regulators. Ability to use and interpret computer data, wiring diagrams, technical data, blueprints, schematics, and engineering instructions. Skill in tracing hard to locate and intermittent electrical defects and problems using a variety of meters and testing devices.
  6. Knowledge of safety and security requirements as outlined in applicable standards, regulations and technical orders. Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials accounting and security. Knowledge of USAF Technical Order Program and its procedures.
OTHER SIGNIFICANT FACTS:
  • This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) enlisted position. The incumbent is required to meet and maintain Air Force Reserve requirements. Work schedule will be aligned to allow the incumbent to fully participate in unit training assemblies. The incumbent's regular assignments are primarily ART duties; however, the incumbent may also be assigned non-ART duties, generally not to exceed 30 percent of total responsibilities.
  • The incumbent may be required to fly in military and/or commercial aircraft to perform temporary duty assignments (TDY) away from the normal duty station.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Heavy lifting (up to 40 lbs). Two man lift for items exceeding 40 lbs. Heavy carrying (40 lbs). Reaching above the shoulder. Use of fingers. Both hands required. Hours of walking are approximately 4 hours/day. Hours of standing are approximately 4 hours/day. Hours of repeated bending are approximately 4 hours/day. Climbing, use of legs and arms. Both legs required. Operation of special purpose and/or motor vehicles. Near vision correctable at 13 inches to 16 inches to Jaeger I to 4. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other. Depth perception. Ability to distinguish basic colors. Ability to distinguish shades of color. Hearing (with or without aid permitted). If it can be otherwise accommodated, a specific physical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify a candidate.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Work is performed in hangar areas, outdoors, in/on aircraft, and sometimes in hazardous noise areas. Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, humidity and inclement weather. Must work in confined areas and in awkward positions. Exposed to bodily fluids, dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids (oil, hydraulic, fuel, sealants, solvents, hazardous fluids, particulates, and gases). Potentially exposed to Hydrazine, Halon, and/or composites, electrical shocks, RF radiation, explosive hazards and Low Observable (LO). Subject to eye damage due to exposure to LASERs. Subject to cuts, bruises, muscle strain, and injury from falls off scaffolds, ladders, and aircraft surfaces. Slippery or uneven walking surfaces. Working around machinery with moving parts. Working around moving objects or vehicles. May be exposed to intake suction and hot exhaust blast. Working closely with others or working alone.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. ARTs are eligible for 15 days active duty tour each year for which military leave is granted with full civilian pay. Air Reserve units and members; are subject to immediate call to active duty in mobilization to meet a national emergency.
