Inspects and evaluates aircraft and components for the purpose of determining the depth and scope of the necessary repair, overhaul and/or modification required to return such aircraft or components to a serviceable condition. Determines parts and labor costs and compares against repairable limits. Evaluates aircraft for acceptance into National Guard system and rejects same if limits are exceeded or standards are not met. Evaluates wrecked or damaged aircraft to determine repairability and the costs involved.

Performs in-process and final inspections of aircraft and components undergoing repair, overhaul and/or modification, to verify and certify by signature adherence to work techniques, procedures and quality standards established by applicable publications. Exercises authority to sign off Red X conditions on aircraft. Tests aircraft components and systems using a variety of test equipment including ultrasonic test sets for rotor heads, oscilliscopes, etc.

Reviews and checks aircraft forms and records for accuracy and completeness. Verifies that entries on existing forms are accurate and reflect actual aircraft and component serial numbers and operating hours. Verifies that entries required to be transcribed to new forms are carried forward and entered accurately. Resolves discrepancies between recorded and actual status by research with other data-storing agencies or by physical inspection. Corrects and certifies changes entered for record.

Provides technical assistance and expertise on aircraft maintenance and quality control matters to AASF maintenance and supported units. Participates in inspection, technical assistance, maintenance assistance and instruction of unit and AASF personnel. Travels to various states as required. Advises aircraft maintenance personnel on proper maintenance practices, procedures and techniques. Reviews new and interprets existing technical publications applicable to inspection, modification and maintenance of aircraft and equipment. Resolves technical problems encountered. Prepares reports of findings and makes recommendations on implementing quality control programs.

Prepares formal reports for crash damaged aircraft, outlining parts and material required to repair such aircraft as well as forecasting labor requirements to accomplish needed repair or overhaul. Prepares aircraft evaluation reports as required by NGB, TSARCOM, and other agencies.

When designated on NGB Flying Status orders, may participate in aerial flights which are defined by applicable Army publications as Maintenance Test Flights. Serves as a member of the flight crew for the purposes of observing, recording and diagnosing malfunctions or otherwise assisting in determining the airworthiness of aircraft or the functioning of specific items/components when expertise or services are required to accomplish in-flight test requirements.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE is experience or training that has provided the candidate with the skill to remove and replace aircraft parts, accessories, and components, and to make adjustments and settings according to established specifications. Must be skilled in the use of hand tools and test equipment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE is experience which is directly related to the position to be filled and which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.

WG-12- Must have at least 18 months in experience or training installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting, and functionally testing the various major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic systems on an aircraft during overhaul or modification. Experience coordinating the work of other mechanics, and scheduling maintenance to ensure completion of critical actions and optimum workflow. Must have the ability to instruct lower graded mechanics, military and other personnel in the disassembly and re-assembly of crash damaged engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls sufficient for the exhibit to be returned to its shipping container. In addition to journey-level experience or training equivalent to or exceeding the WG-10, experience performing, coordinating, and/or overseeing the work and any periodic inspections to be done on an aircraft whether it is alone, or with the assistance of other mechanics and/or workers. Experience serving as the technical authority to advise on, examine, and approve all airframe, mechanical, electrical, and pneudraulic repairs of assigned aircraft.
