Summary

THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION.

This National Guard position is for a AIRCRAFT MECHANIC (T32), PD# D1063000 and is part of the RI AASF. The purpose of this position is to act as the Aircraft Mechanic (Crew Chief) with responsibility for managing the operational readiness of one or more aircraft, and proficiency training of supported aviation unit personnel.

This position is open to current members of the Rhode Island Army National Guard (RIARNG) or service members willing and eligible to transfer into the RIARNG.

Duties

Serves as the technical authority to identify and advise on requirements for airframe, mechanical, electrical/environmental, avionics, engine, and pneudraulic repairs on assigned aircraft. Works closely with maintenance supervisor(s) and production control personnel to report and maintain current aircraft status. Oversees installation of equipment for special missions. Expedites aircraft operations to include concurrent servicing, refueling, and/or reconfiguration of equipment for changes in operational missions. Manages, monitors or performs overall maintenance, servicing, inspections and documentation for one or more highly technical, high performance military aircraft. Plans, develops and conducts proficiency training during the technician work week to a multi-faceted workforce comprised of Full Time Support (FTS) and supported unit personnel. Ensures Unit Level Logistics-Aviation (ULLS-A) and other aircraft documentation accurately reflects status and airworthiness of assigned aircraft. Makes diagnoses and solves malfunctions of aircraft systems and components by utilizing a wide variety of complex, state of the art computerized and/or non-computerized Test Measurement Diagnostic Equipment (TMDE); by studying layout drawings, blueprints and wiring diagrams; and analyzing specifications and operating characteristics of aircraft and their components. Performs such additional duties as structural fire fighting, aircraft fire/crash/rescue duty, security guard, snow removal, munitions loading and handling, maintenance of facilities and equipment or serves as a member of teams to cope with natural disasters or civil emergencies. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. This is an excepted service position that requires military membership in the Rhode Island Army National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment of the Gun Control Act. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.

MILITARY GRADES:
E-4 through E-7

Compatible Military Requirements: For Dual-Status Technician positions service affiliation under Title 32 USC 709 is required. Military skill set is determined by AFSC/MOS requirements. Upon selection, individuals must be assigned to a compatible military AFSC/MOS in accordance with statutes and National Guard Bureau regulations and must obtain/maintain all requirements of the AFSC/MOS.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the skill to remove and replace aircraft parts, accessories, and components, and to make adjustments and settings according to established specifications. Must be skilled in the use of hand tools and test equipment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Experience or training installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting and functionally testing the various major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic systems on an aircraft during overhaul or modification. Experience coordinating the work of other mechanics, and scheduling maintenance to ensure completion of critical actions and optimum workflow. Must have the ability to instruct lower graded mechanics, military and other personnel in the disassembly and re-assembly of crash damaged engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls sufficient for the exhibit to be returned to its shipping container.

Education may not be used as a substitution for experience in the occupational series and grade.

  • Knowledge of the theory and operation of aircraft systems to troubleshoot malfunctions and problems, and determine the extent of repairs and involvement of others in expediting the aircrafts return to combat ready status.
  • Knowledge of the makeup, operation, installation and adjustment of major interrelated and/or integrated aircraft systems, subsystems, and assemblies.
  • Able to plan the sequence of steps, research technical data, and select necessary tools, repair parts, and otherwise carry assignments through to completion.
  • Able to ensure that complex military aircraft are prepared to carry out the day-to-day training mission.
  • Provides technical guidance and assistance to flight crews regarding observed discrepancies, experienced in-flight characteristics and system malfunctions.
  • Understands the technical theory and operational characteristics of airframe, also of mission systems peculiar to the unit aircraft and assigned mission.
  • Able to resolve problems and devise solutions when aircraft are not at home station, or at a location where the full complement of support equipment, supplies, parts, tools and maintenance personnel are not available.
  • Responsible for the training and professional development of assigned full-time and drill status personnel.
  • Observes and inspects performance of other workers work to ensure compliance with applicable technical publications, directives and local policy.
  • Experience and/or appropriate training that would demonstrate a thorough knowledge of aircraft systems and components in electrical, fuel, hydraulic, environmental and mechanical principles.
