- Travel by military or commercial transportation to gather ideas for improving the curriculum, establish research contacts and agreements, conduct research, and present results of research may be required.
- Initial appointment is under Schedule A appointing authority, Excepted Appointment Not-to-Exceed 3-years.
- At the time of the expiration of the initial appointment an employee who adequately demonstrates professional competence can be extended in increments up to 3 years or for an indefinite period.
- An initial appointment can be allowed to expire for an employee who does not adequately demonstrate professional competence.
- The appointment cannot be converted to a permanent tenure in the competitive service.
- Current Federal employees on a permanent or indefinite appointment will be required to have a minimum of 3-day break in service if selected.
- This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service. This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.

- Permanent Change in Station (PCS) cost is not authorized.

- Incumbent may be required to travel by commercial or military conveyance (or other means of travel) to perform temporary duty.
- Additional duties supporting the academic and administrative aspects of a military school can be assigned by school and/or university leaders.
- This civilian faculty duty period is normally 12 months, however a shorter duty period with a corresponding pro-rated salary (e.g., 10/12 of an annual salary for a 10-month duty period) may be required.
Qualifications
- Anticipated completion of an earned Doctorate degree in Astronautical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field, with emphasis in areas of Controls and/or Spacecraft Design and/or Astronautics and/or Space Warfighting is required before employment begins.
- Demonstrated professional knowledge of foundational and one or more advanced topics associated with Aerospace Engineering. These areas include, but are not limited to: control systems for spacecraft, all aspects of the design of satellites and/or other spacecraft, modeling and simulation of space operations, and orbital dynamics, to include multi-body systems and proximity operations. Successful candidates in any of these areas should have at least a year of formal education and a year of research in these areas beyond the Master of Science degree. Candidates with strong experience in specialty areas of aerospace outside of these are encouraged to apply
- Applicants must exhibit potential for maintaining a strong publication and funding effort commensurate with each academic rank.
- Applicants must possess the ability to communicate clearly and expertly (in English) in both verbal and written forms concerning academic, administrative, and technical subject matters.
At the Assistant Professor Rank: For an initial appointment to the academic rank of Assistant Professor, applicants should have a strong potential for both teaching and research at the graduate level. Applicants should have a distinguished academic record and the background, commitment, and desire to teach graduate classes, conduct research, and publish.
At the Associate Professor Rank: In addition to the criteria for an Assistant Professor, an initial appointment to the academic rank of Associate Professor must be based on convincing evidence that the individual has demonstrated excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. The candidate must have 5 years of significant professional experience after having earned the doctoral degree. This will normally include no fewer than 3 years of full-time, university-level teaching at the Assistant Professor rank or higher. Alternatively, for those with fewer than 3 years of teaching experience, the requirement is 6 years of significant professional experience with research credentials normally expected of a full Professor.
Applicants will be assessed based on education, evidence of teaching effectiveness, quality of scholarship, and demonstrated service to educational institutions and the discipline commensurate with years in the discipline.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
