JOB TITLE:        Equipment Repairer
BUSINESS TITLE:    Athletic Equipment Repairer

This position pay level is NA-08/09/10. At the NA-08 level, the incumbent serves in the developmental capacity performing duties under closer than normal supervision.  The incumbent is required to successfully complete all training requirements, obtain required skills and knowledge to perform all the duties in this PD independently. The incumbent must be recommended by the supervisor prior to advancement to the intermediate level NA-09 and to the target grade level of NA-10 without competition.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works independently or as part of a team at job sites such as MCCS gymnasiums and other recreational activities island wide to perform repair and maintenance of equipment, and to instruct facility managers in the proper procedures for conducting 1st echelon equipment maintenance.  Troubleshoots and repairs equipment based on established work methods and trade practices, utilizing technical and manufacturer's manuals, wiring diagrams, and specifications.  Conducts preventive maintenance as assigned by the shop supervisor.  Identifies deficiencies and makes the required adjustments or coordinates with the shop supervisor to procure the required parts to schedule needed repairs.  The shop supervisor provides work schedules and technical advice when required.  

Disassembles and conducts Limited Technical Inspection Reports (LTI) on equipment earmarked for disposal.  Installs newly procured athletic equipment and related items.

Repairs, replaces and upgrades upholstery on equipment and furniture as required.

Typical examples of equipment serviced include treadmills, bikes, steppers, cross-country trainers, spin bikes, units combined complex exercise functions, and other weightlifting and bodybuilding equipment.  Performs mechanical and basic electrical checks to locate trouble.  Manufactures and fabricates replacements such as bolts and wheels by cutting, filing, grinding and drilling available parts when specific parts cannot be obtained.  Utilizes torches to solder and braze broken parts, repair electrical connections, and replace electronic parts.  Tests new and repaired equipment to assure it is properly functioning. 

Assists supervisor to maintain adequate inventory of all parts for equipment by part and type of machine to complete work assignments.

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy.  Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner.  Asks questions to determine, verify and solve problems.  Checks for satisfaction on the quality of goods and services.  Takes action to solve problems quickly.  Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise.  

Adheres to safety regulations and standards.  Uses required safety equipment and observes safe work procedures.  Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor.

Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:  

At level NA-08: 
The incumbent must have, under direct supervision, the ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions by referring to established maintenance manuals through visual, operational, and standard test equipment.  Knowledge of how the parts, components and assemblies are installed and how they work together to locate malfunctions.  Ability to determine what part and mechanism can be reworked or should be replaced with new parts.  Skills in disassembling, repairing or replacing defective parts, cleaning, and reassembling scuba equipment.  Ability to use common hand tools as well as specialized equipment.  Ability to perform hydrostatics test on various types of scuba cylinders.  

At intermediate level NA-09:
The incumbent must have the ability to perform work above the NA-08 requirements under limited to no supervision/instruction, basic knowledge of design, principles, and operating characteristics of a variety of athletic equipment that has mechanical, electrical, and electronic parts and systems in order to install, maintain, and repair athletic equipment in accordance with appropriate work methods and accepted trade practices. 

At target level NA-10: 
The incumbent must have Comprehensive knowledge of the design, principles, and operating characteristics of a variety of athletic equipment that has mechanical, electrical, and electronic parts and systems in order to install, maintain, repair and overhaul athletic equipment in accordance with appropriate work methods and accepted trade practices.

Must be skilled in the operation of common electrical test devices to perform basic checks for continuity, resistance, voltage, opens, shorts, insulation breakdowns, and grounds.

Must be able to interpret and apply technical and manufacturer's manuals, wiring diagrams, and specifications.

Must be skilled in utilizing torches to solder and braze broken parts, repair electrical connections, and replace electronic parts.

RESPONSIBILITY:  Work is normally assigned through work orders.  At the target grade, works independently with minimum supervision.  Periodically follows preventive maintenance schedules established by the manufacturer but make changes when factors such as time and lack of personnel make it necessary.  Selects tools and equipment and determines whether parts can be repaired or must be replaced, make necessary adjustments, and complete assignments with little or no direction.  The incumbent is responsible for maintaining stock levels of parts, tools and equipment and initiating purchase requests.  Completed work is checked by the supervisor for timeliness and proper operation of the equipment.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:  Work assignments involve lifting and carrying parts and assemblies weighing up to 40 pounds.  Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stooping, standing and working in awkward positions.

WORKING CONDITION:  Work is performed inside in areas that are hot and noisy.  Occasionally required to work outdoors and may be exposed to bad weather.  Exposed to oil, dust, and grease, and the possibility to cuts, bruises, and injury from the use of hand and power tools and machines, and when soldering and brazing parts.  Must be familiar of all safety requirements that apply to working on electrical equipment.  Facilities, equipment, tools, materials, and chemicals used in work operations may cause various physical hazards.  May be required to use protective equipment.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must be at least 18 years old AND have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school;
    OR
    Have completed a formal vocational training program;  
    OR
    Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with preference for employment rather than continuing education.

  2. Must have a valid driver's license.
  3. A valid Government Owned Vehicle (GOV) operator's permit is required for the performance of duties for this position. Inability to obtain or maintain appropriate GOV licensing may result in termination for lack of qualifications. The incumbent is required to obtain required GOV licenses within 30 days of hire.
