Duties

  • You will check work orders to verify automotive repairs, modifications, or other actions have been accomplished.
  • You will follow checklists, schematics, and codes to determine which engine components need examined.
  • You will interpret results of diagnostic and test equipment to determine vehicle repairs.
  • You will use standard shop procedures in conjunction with instructions and specifications to diagnose and repair vehicles.
  • You will operate diagnostic test equipment to troubleshoot vehicles and equipment and determine the source or cause of malfunctions or error code.
  • You will use a computer automated maintenance management program (e.g., handheld mobile device) to record and document vehicle maintenance information.
  • You will use automotive equipment (e.g., wheel alignment machines, brake testers, engine analyzers, headlight aimers, wheel balancers) to test and repair automobiles.
  • You will use hand or power tools (e.g., wrenches, sockets, ratchets, impact wrenches, pliers, brake tools, screwdrivers, electric drills, pneumatic wrenches, soldering irons) to perform automotive repair and maintenance.
  • You will assemble, repair, or replace major components of automotive vehicles (e.g., engines, transmissions, differentials) to keep vehicles in working condition.
  • You will check operation of automotive components for compliance with the specification of instructions and technical manuals.
  • You will disassemble gasoline and diesel engines to replace parts (e.g., pistons, piston rings, valves, bearings, wrist pins, gaskets, injectors, ignition systems.
  • You will perform automotive repair work on automobiles, gasoline and diesel powered trucks, buses, tractors, trailers, and material handling equipment.
  • You will run operational checks and tests on completed automotive work.
  • You will determine methods and techniques to use in accomplishing automotive work.
  • You will inspect automotive shops periodically for conformity with best practices on preventive maintenance, storage of materials, and security of equipment and materials.

  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • San Nicolas Island, CA includes a $10/day allowance.
  • Travel by military or commercial aircraft, boats, and ships may be required.
  • May be required to train and/or guide lower grade employees and student trainees.
  • May be required to utilize computer hardware/software for the purpose of initiating work orders and vehicle parts requests.
  • Incumbent must obtain/ maintain a valid Class "B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with proper endorsement(s) for the types and classes of vehicle(s) to be operated.
  • Incumbent must obtain/maintain a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operator ID [OF- 346], and a valid Material Handling - Equipment Operator's License.
  • May be required to drive a wrecker/tow truck typically having a GVWR of more than 26,000 pounds to transport inoperable on-base vehicles to the maintenance compound on an as needed basis only.
  • Incumbent may be required to take part in mobility exercises and contingency operations.
  • The employee may be required to work regularly scheduled overtime or overtime on an emergency basis.
  • The incumbent is required to furnish his or her own personal basic automotive mechanic tools and chest. Special tools and equipment must be provide.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1. Using a variety of test procedures and equipment in tracing hard-to-locate defects or problems, and completing repairs and installations with little or no technical assistance; 2. Using diagnostic tests, visual and auditory examinations, and a wide variety of test equipment such as , computerized engine analyzers, manufacturer diagnostic tools and equipment, compression testers, test benches, oscilloscopes, multi-meters, and special feeler and dial gauges to isolate and repair malfunctions. 3. Read and interpret manuals. 4. Knowledge of electrical systems. 5. Interpret wiring diagrams and schematic drawings for electrical work.

Physical Effort: May work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. Frequently stands for long periods of time, bends, stoops, crawls under vehicles, and makes repairs in other tight spaces. Frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally moves moderately heavy items with assistance or with mechanical devices, including objects weighing up to or over 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: The work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. May occasionally perform work outside under adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. To reduce dangers and irritations from these conditions, follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as, safety shoes, safety glasses, and respirators.
