Summary

The VCS Central Office, located at the Jefferson Barracks VA Medical Center in St. Louis, MO, is seeking an Accountant. This position reports to the Chief Accountant. In this role, you will be involved in the day-to-day operations of the VCS Finance Center, implementing and monitoring policies and procedures on a National level.

Duties

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Analyzes and reconciles a variety of accounts and transactions.
  • Formulates a variety of routine financial reports and assists in year-end close-out.
  • Prepares procedural instructions to be used in the development or modification of automated accounting systems and/or specific program areas.
  • Assists management in applying financial data and recommends alternatives to resolve difficult issues.
  • Resolves differences between the general ledger and subsidiary accounts.
  • Analyzes financial and statistical data.
  • Participates in meetings or engages in direct discussions regarding Finance Center business.
  • Conducts training and/or writes training programs.
  • Provides feedback concerning policies, procedures, and automated systems on how business practices could be improved.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • You will be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the basic educational requirement, you must also meet the following Minimum Specialized Qualification Requirements:
  • Two years of professional experience formulating a variety of financial reports.
  • A strong understanding of accounting principles and financial statements.
  • Organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills in analyzing financial data and identifying issues/trends.
  • The ability to make informed decisions.
  • Assisting with budget year-end close-outs.
  • Preparing procedural instructions to be used in the development or modification of automated accounting systems.
  • Resolving differences between the general ledger and subsidiary accounts.
  • Entering, modifying, retrieving, and deleting information in an automated accounting system.
  • Establishing and planning work priorities and deadlines.
  • Providing technical and administrative, instruction, and counsel to unit employees.

NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume.

Education

24 semester hours in accounting, which may include up to 6 hours of credit in business law.
Or
A bachelor's degree in accounting.
Or
A degree in a related field such as business administration, finance, or public administration that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours in accounting.
