Duties
The AC Equipment Mechanic's duties will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Journeyman Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic which indicates an extensive knowledge of the work practices, methods, and requirements of the refrigeration and air conditioning trades.
- Incumbent has practical knowledge of other trades such as pipefitting, electrical, plumbing and sheet metal work.
- The incumbent is responsible for the troubleshooting and repair of multi-zone air conditioning equipment with all necessary fans, pumps, cooling towers and controls required to condition medical center space.
- Work with little or no detailed instructions in the performance of assigned tasks.
- Prepare duct work diagrams in planning and laying out work.
- Maintains and performs preventive maintenance on the environmental control rooms.
- Responsible for providing updated data on all items under the preventive maintenance program, recording on work orders all repaired data including time, parts, materials and cost of items used.
- Working knowledge of steam operating systems.
- Incumbent has comprehensive trade knowledge of electrical theory (A.C. and D.C.) with (single and triple phase) principles, elements, and system operations.
- Incumbent has knowledge of safe work practices, methods, standard operating procedures and processes as required.
- Responsible for the maintenance and repairs performed on all air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation and heating systems assigned.
- Shall perform appropriate requirements on the following systems and equipment: Pneumatic and electronic control panels, window air conditioners, walk-in and reaching refrigerators, ice machines, fan coil units, air handlers, self-contained chiller units, multi-zone systems, cooling towers and associated components, water pumps, flow indicators, electrical, mechanical and pneumatic valves, drinking water coolers, steam, electrical and gas fired heating units, pressure reducing valves, traps, ventilation units, mechanical and motorizedlouvers, vent pipe for gas fired equipment, strainers and any other devices associated with cooling, heating, ventilation or refrigeration.
- Accomplish all tasks by following appropriate technical data, blueprints, free hard sketches, work orders, verbal instructions and by using correct test equipment, tools and protective clothing.
- Provide uninterrupted control of the environment in designated areas.
- The incumbent required to have Universal Refrigerant Certification.

Physical Requirements: The duties of this position require physical exertion involving lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes and shapes. Physical effort is exerted in walking, running, climbing, crawling, and bending. Strain related to lack of movement such as standing in place, crouching or stooping for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions: Incumbent is exposed to heat, restricted ventilation and poor illumination in areas such as equipment rooms. Exposed to all weather conditions when working outside (cooling towers, roof, etc.). Incumbent is exposed to varying climatic conditions from an office, to environmentally controlled space, to excessive heat in boiler plant. Exposed to various hazardous materials in the course of performing work assignments. They are provided protective clothing, equipment and safety devices for their personal protection. The equipment rooms are above the allowable decibel rating and hearing protection is provided. Hazardous gases are in the work environment during various tasks. Respiratory protection is provided for the incumbent.
