Summary

The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic located at the Engineering Service at Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center, will report to Operations Supervisor. A/C Mechanic will assist with steam generation plant, chiller, and peripheral operations (AHU) and any rovering duties.

Duties

As an Air-Conditioning Equipment Mechanic, the incumbent operates a centralized, multiple zones air-conditioning plant that serves the medical center complex. The air-conditioning plant consists of two (2) 635-ton Centrifugal York chillers and the system performs various functions such as cooling, humidification, dehumidification, filtration, and ventilation. He/she may be required to work in conjunction with steam generation plant as relief, emergency, or on a continuing basis. Incumbent will provide Steam generation support.

  • Must be UNIVERSAL E.P.A. certified to handle, recover, and reclaim refrigerants for all types of machines used at this medical center.
  • Operates a centralized, multiple zones air-conditioning plant that serves the medical center complex.
  • Maintaining water treatment in the cooling towers, distribution systems and the steam generation plant as per instructions and chemical company recommendations.

  • Control the separate zones from a master control panel, i.e., select the operating temperatures, minimum fresh air, start and stop fans, can check zone temperatures, or may perform the same functions from local switches and gauges at the equipment site.
  • Repairs, maintains, installs, and performs preventive maintenance on air conditioning plant equipment including two (2) 635-ton Centrifugal York chillers, cooling towers, air compressors, valves, pumps, pneumatic and electric controls, motorized dampers, water treatment equipment, gauges, fans, fan coil units, and other related equipment throughout the facility.
  • Recognizes the cause of failures and/or operational problems on a large variety of equipment and systems
  • Performs a variety of repairs ranging from replacing entire assemblies to simple adjustments and changing filters.
  • Uses a large variety of diagnostic or testing equipment and remedy the situation quickly to avoid disruption of patient care.
  • Rebuild units, such as pumps, heating/cooling coils, valves, replacing parts such as bearings, seals, gaskets, and couplings.
  • Perform minor or emergency repair of systems throughout the facility to keep them functioning on a 24-hour basis or to secure them until the following workday.
  • Evaluate emergency calls on all systems

1 position: Saturday & Sunday 0600-1800 Weekdays TBD 2200-0630
2 positions: Monday-Friday 0800-1630
