Summary

The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic serves in the Engineering service at the Hershel "Woody" Williams VA Medical Center, a level 1C hospital. This position is a key advisor to the M&O Supervisor (Mechanic) and the M&O General Foreman, providing insight and recommendations on management with consideration involving general administration, budget management, manpower, resource utilization, and participation in Engineering Service affairs.

Duties

Duties will include, but not limited to the following:

  • Independently perform troubleshooting, repairs, preventive maintenance and calibration on a variety of air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating equipment, such as but not limited to:
    • (3) 650 ton packaged air cooled reciprocating chillers
    • (48) air handling units which includes heating coils, cooling coils, and all piping and components (i.e. steam traps, strainers, control valves) from the gate valve inlet to the gate valve outlet on the discharge side of the coil; a 250 ton cooling tower that provides the entire medical center with cooling capability
    • (18} 2½ ton fan coil units, ice makers, water coolers, and associated equipment, such as humidifiers, filters, exhaust fans,. piping, circulating pumps, water tower chemical control, high, medium, and low-pressure steam humidifiers, walk-in freezers, refrigerators, pneumatic controlled semi-­instantaneous water heaters, and steam pressure reducing stations servicing heating equipment. Incumbent will perform preventive maintenance and repairs on general system air compressors and pneumatic control compressors.
  • Independently calibrate, test, and adjust all electronic and pneumatic controls associated with temperature and humidity. Occasionally, size and install complete new HVAC systems. Shall also assist with reviews, drawings, and specifications during design of construction projects by outside Architect/Engineering firms.
  • Independently tests, calibrates, repairs, and replaces component parts of the control system, such as thermostats, humidistats, transmitters, controllers, sub-controllers, relay switches, valves, and damper motors to accomplish necessary repairs. Independently calibrates individual control components in the proper sequence manually or by utilizing the direct digital control (DOC) systems in the Medical Center and utilizes the DOC systems to evaluate, track, and trend heating/cooling usage in order to minimize peak loads resulting in energy savings. Also troubleshoots and repairs electronic controls of the DOC systems and checks and maintains proper chemical levels for cooling tower and all closed heating and cooling loops
  • For all disciplines HVAC, Electrical and Plumbing, ensure that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are all available and that needed stock, tools, or equipment is obtained from supply locations
  • Must have the knowledge, experience, and ability to operate and repair air conditioning systems, plumbing, pumps, compressors, steam systems, small/medium size electrical/automotive motors, and basic electrical generating equipment and distribution systems. Must perform operational repairs, preventive and routine maintenance on these systems and all their associated controls
  • Responsibility in the absence of written procedures or instructions to start or secure the chiller units, pumps, equipment, systems, etc., to ensure continued air conditioning and heat system operation until necessary corrective action can be taken and completed in the event of air conditioning or heat problems.
  • Be able to determine if an electrical device/circuit is energized and familiar with electric meters or like to check fuses on de-energized circuits.
  • Use a variety of controls (electric, pneumatic, electronic, and hydraulic) to control all phases of air conditioning and other utilities.
  • Use gauges, charts, temperature monitoring equipment, and adjust controls, as required, for proper air conditioning operations
  • Electrically and mechanically troubleshoot, provide preventive maintenance for industrial HVAC equipment, residential HVAC equipment and all associated supporting heating ventilation systems. Trouble shoot and program electronic controls on equipment items and disconnect and reconnect primary and secondary distribution circuits up to 480 volts
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Must exert moderate to arduous physical effort involving walking, standing, bending, sitting, squatting, stooping, lifting, kneeling, working overhead, and crawling. Incumbent is required to work on platforms, scaffolds, ladders, aerial lifts, and roofs, and is required to climb onto these structures carrying and lifting materials, tools, and equipment. Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding and operate bucket truck and forklift. Must be able to lift loads of up to eighty (80) lbs. Frequently, work will be performed in cramped and awkward positions, including crawlspaces. Also, work is performed on interior and exterior of buildings. Work performed is of a precise nature requiring prolonged concentration. Must work at times under conditions of extreme stress and must be able to interact effectively with medical staff and perform work in a calm analytical manner.
