- Meet qualification/eligibility/background requirements for this position.
- A one year probationary period may be required.
- Satisfactory completion of pre-employment background checks in accordance with AR 215-3, para.2.
- Incumbent may also be required to complete a Tier 1 background investigation for a Common Access Card for physical access to federally-controlled facilities.
- Frequently works in awkward positions, cramped are or hard to reach places. Work involves frequent bending, reaching, crouching, standing, and arm movement.
- Mechanic carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and lifting devices such as hoists, pulleys or cranes.
- Work is performed primarily indoors, occasionally outdoors; the shop is heated and ventilated, but the work environment may be noisy, with varying temperatures, and exposure to grease, dirt, and dampness.
- Subject to possible injuries such as strains, sprains, cuts, bruises and electrical shock from hand and machine tools and dropped units end equipment.
- Frequent exposure to refrigerant gases end exhaust fumes. Requires adherence to safety procedures and use of protective gear, including gloves, goggles, masks, earplugs, and safety shoes.
- Work hours may involve weekend, weekdays, holidays and night duty.
Qualifications
A thorough knowledge of the mechanical and electrical make-up and operation of the equipment repaired. Uses knowledge of the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration such as refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, use of refrigerant tables, how to regulate and determine airflow, and the pressure temperature characteristics, for the different systems in order to locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly, safely and with a minimum of inoperative time. Ability to locate trouble before dismantling, and repair unit to ensure proper functioning after assembly. Knowledge to use prescribed test procedures and equipment such as welding equipment, testing equipment, shop machinery, multimeter, vacuum and pressure gauges, and lear detectors, and hand tools common to the trade. Ability to read and use technical manuals, drawings, sketches, wiring diagrams and schematics.
