In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-11 level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes establishing and maintaining radio or visual contact with aircrafts; analyzing field and weather observations used to control air traffic; and determining the order of aircraft arrivals and departures in a terminal. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service
(GS-09).
GS-12 level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes formulating and issuing rapid and precise air traffic control instructions; directing aircraft movement in flight and on runways or taxiways; and controlling takeoff and landing of military or civilian aircraft utilizing a radar approach control facility.
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must be a graduate of a Department of Defense component or Federal Aviation Administration approved formal Air Traffic Controller school and possess Air Traffic Control Specialist or Control Tower Operator certifications. (Note: You must attach a copy of your certifications for verification).
Maximum Entry Age (MEA)
The MEA for Air Traffic Controller is 36. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 36th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions.
Maximum Re-entry Age
An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she meets the applicable qualification requirements AND will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered service as an Air Traffic Controller by the last day of the month in which they become 56. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.
Waivers to Maximum Entry Age
MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for Air Traffic Controllers must be approved by local Command. However, any individual who has reached the mandatory separation age (56) is not eligible for employment or reemployment as an Air Traffic Controller.
