In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-11 Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes the performance of the following tasks: 1.) Issuing instructions to aircraft operating under visual flight rules considering such factors as: position (both present and projected), speed, and direction of aircraft movement; performance characteristics of the aircraft being controlled (e.g., operating speed, rate of climb, and landing speed); and the runway(s) available for use; 2.) Determining the time and sequence of aircraft movement to maintain separation among arriving and departing aircraft; 3) Assigning runways based on need of the aircraft such as wind direction and speed, and separation requirements.
In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also be a graduate of a DoD component or FAA approved formal Air Traffic Controller school and possess an Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) (Radar) OR Control Tower Operator (CTO) certification for the GS-11. GS-12 -Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service level including 1.) Ensuring separation of aircraft traveling in assigned airspace sectors; 2.) Utilizing radar communication tools to perform controller functions such as: Utilizes Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR-11), Data Automation Processing Group (STARS/DASS), Flight Data Input/Output (FDIO), Precision Approach Radar (PAR), Navigational Aids, aircraft transponder (secondary radar), primary radar, and radio and telephone; 3.) Tracking radar targets to perform control functions in accordance with policies such as: Federal Aviation Administration, Department of Defense, and Department of Army rules and regulations and interfacility Letters of Agreement.
