Conditions of employment
- Work schedule is flexible and will vary as required by the needs of the program to include night, weekend, and holiday shifts as well as split days off.
- Physical Effort: Medical Clearance and heavy lifting. Frequently lift and carry items and animals weighing over seventy (70) pounds. Moderate effort is required to operate power washing and mowing equipment.
- Working Conditions: Works inside in often poorly lighted or insulated areas, and outside exposed to extreme weather conditions. Inside work often exposes animal caretakers to unpleasant odors and noises.
- Working Conditions: Exposed to dirt, dust, and height. Subject to cuts, bruises, kicks, electric shock, bites, scratches and ticks from animals.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.
Qualifying Experience:
Knowledge of animal behavior, health, nutrition, and basic care for dogs, cats, and other small animals. Ability to recognize signs of illness, injury, or distress and respond appropriately. Experience safely handling, restraining, lifting, and transporting animals. Skilled in administering medications and following specialized care instructions. Strong customer service, communication, and recordkeeping skills. Ability to work independently, follow written and verbal instructions, and maintain attention to detail. Physically capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds (and up to 90 pounds with assistance), handling feed and supplies, standing and walking for extended periods, and performing frequent bending, lifting, and cleaning. Comfortable working in environments with animal odors, noise, cleaning chemicals, and potential exposure to animal bites, scratches, or other hazards while following safety protocols.

Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution in order to qualify.
FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
