Summary

These are Temporary, Seasonal appointments: These positions may be filled for a six-month seasonal period, but can be vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2025

These Animal Packer (Custodial) positions will be located in the east district of Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), duty stationed out of Estes Park, CO, and will work independently with a pack team of up to four (4) llamas to service backcountry restroom facilities.

  • Work independently with a pack team of up to four (4) llamas to service backcountry restroom facilities.
  • The incumbent should be familiar with and have experience with llamas specifically.
  • The main purpose of this position (as an Animal Packer (Custodial), at this level) is to hike to backcountry toilet facilities to process waste and recycling, leading llamas to pack tools and supplies in and solid waste out.
  • Animal Packers must use and maintain equipment and operate vehicles and pickup trucks to transport supplies, materials and pack animals.
  • Back county travel is required for this position.

Physical Demands: When incumbent is maintaining backcountry toilets, he/she must be able to hike distances of 2 to 12 miles at elevations ranging from 7,500 feet to those exceeding 12,000 feet using a string of llamas to pack in supplies and equipment and waste out. Loads animals in a heavy duty pickup in order to transport them to trail heads. Light to moderate physical effort is required in performing custodial duties. Incumbent is required to walk, stand, bend, reach, stoop, and kneel for extended periods of time. Moderately heavy physical effort is used occasionally in moving, setting up, and working from ladders and scaffolding. Use of heavy powered cleaning equipment is required, but not on a continual basis. Incumbent exerts light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. He/she exerts moderate physical effort in the frequent. handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and the occasional handling of heavier objects while loading cargo with the assistance of other workers.

Working Conditions: Work indoors is performed in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation. He/she is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in cleaning toilets, urinals, etc. Care is required to avoid serious injuries when working on ladders and scaffolds and when using heavy powered equipment. At risk for infectious diseases. Operates vehicles in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment throughout the park. Exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of. accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. Is exposed to sun, rain, snow, high winds, and temperature ranging from -40 degrees to 90+ degrees F. Works at elevations ranging from 7500 ft. to 12500 ft.

  • LLAMAS: These positions work independently with a pack team of up to four (4) llamas to service backcountry restroom facilities. The incumbent should be familiar with and have experience with llamas specifically.
  • Housing: Government housing may be available.
  • Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Work Schedule: You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work.
  • Travel: You may be required to travel overnight away from home occasionally, from 1-6 nights per month. Backcountry travel is required for these positions.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Driver's License: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
  1. Ability to perform the duties of an Animal Packer (Custodial) WG-5001-06 without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT) - Animal Packer workers at this level perform the following duties: Perform minor maintenance such as clearing clogged drains, painting, replacing toilet seats and installing dispensers. Hike to backcountry toilet facilities to process waste and recycling, while leading llamas or other pack animals to pack tools and supplies in and solid waste out. Use and maintain custodial equipment and operate vehicles and pickup trucks to transport supplies, materials and pack animals.
