Summary

This position is located in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park.

This is a permanent Career-Seasonal appointment. Please refer to the "Requirements" section for additional information.

Duties

As an Architect (Historical), GS-0808-11, with the National Park Service (NPS), your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Participates in National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 consultation and compliance activities as they relate to historic structures.
  • Performs architectural duties associated with review, design, treatment, and monitoring of historic and prehistoric structures.
  • Collaborates on interdisciplinary teams at the park level to promote cultural resource and historic preservation stewardship goals and objectives, including review and preparation of NRHP nominations.
  • Provides technical assistance and subject matter expertise as it relates to historic structures and districts.
  • Identifies research needs and suitable research designs and conducts or oversees various levels of documentary research and field investigations.
  • Conducts research involving historical documents, photographs, plans, drawings, and related items to develop knowledge of and data about specific historic and prehistoric structures, such as period designs.
  • Negotiates cooperative and interagency agreements and other cooperative instruments needed to effectively carry out resource stewardship goals.

  • This is a permanent Career-Seasonal appointment. This position includes the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work approximately from (mid-January to December) and will be in a non-pay status for 1 pay period in mid-January.
  • The selectee will work during annually recurring periods of employment for the position, which will last at least six (6) months but total less than twelve (12) months per calendar year. When operation needs and/or funds are not available, the selectee will be placed in non pay status. Placement in non-pay status will not be on a sporadic, occasional, or unplanned basis.
  • Benefits while in a non pay status - While in non pay status your Federal employee Heath Benefits (FEHB) and Federal Employee Group Life Insurance elections will continue. You may elect to cancel or retain your health insurance coverage. If you elect to retain coverage, you may choose between paying the agency directly on a current basis or having the premiums accumulate and be withheld from your pay upon returning to duty.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/25/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

To qualify for this position, you must have a Bachelor's or higher degree in architecture OR related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture OR related disciplines of which at least 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.

OR
A combination of college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to the design and construction or improvement of buildings. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by at least one of the following: (1) A degree in architectural engineering OR (2) One year of experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation from a program of study in architecture. In the absence of college courses, 5 years of such experience is required. This experience must have demonstrated acquisition of thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture.

In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, you must possess one year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level applying professional architecture skills and interdisciplinary professional knowledge of the theories, principles, practices and techniques of historic architecture, architectural conservation, building preservation, stabilization, rehabilitation, and reconstruction procedures and methodologies planning and managing historic preservation projects; preparing or assisting with the preparation of engineering/architectural investigation reports on historic properties; overseeing contractor work on a historic architecture-related project; preparing engineering and architectural specifications and work plans; and your work involved a variety of conventional or more complicated design, renovation, and maintenance projects (e.g., a variety of roof types, woodworking, building facade, etc.) for structures and effect of the work resulted in improving the efficiency, economy, safety, adequacy, and aesthetics of buildings.

3 years of higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in Architecture OR related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture OR related disciplines of which at least 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.

A combination of education and experience that together meet the qualification requirements for this position as described above.

To qualify based on education, you must possess 3 years of higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in Architecture OR related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture OR related disciplines of which at least 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.
