MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Assists the Golf Course Superintendent in making determinations in the use of pesticides, chemicals, fertilizer and grass seed needed for the upkeep of an 27 hole Golf Course which includes greens, tees, fairways, roughs, practice range, equipment maintenance building, equipment storage building, chemical storage and mixing building, irrigation system, pump house and ponds within the confines of the Golf Course. Tours the Golf Course to review work in progress and to observe the condition of the Golf Course.
- Assists and ensures the proper functioning of the irrigation system and determines the correct amount of water applied on greens, tees, and fairways under various climatic conditions.
- May make decisions on the amounts and types of soil nutriments and fertilizers to be applied to greens, fairways and roughs. Must know how to take soil samples and decipher results for necessary amendments. Administers amounts and types of soil nutriments and fertilizers for the greens, tees, fairways and roughs.
- Assists and makes recommendations for the selection, application, storage, and otherwise safe handling of pesticides and other toxic substances. Takes preventative measures to prevent damage to the course by small animals. Oversees the Hazardous Material and Hazardous Waste Program for the Golf Course.
- Must be able to recognize turf damage by fungus and insects, apply fungicide, pesticide and pematicides to correct problem. Must be able to calibrate sprayers and sprinklers so that the correct amount of materials will be applied to designated areas.
- Assists in ensuring that equipment is maintained and repairs are performed to acceptable standards. Offers advice in the selection of new and replacement equipment for the Golf Course and its maintenance. Insures through the mechanic that the equipment assigned is at an acceptable standard to maintain the Golf Course. Plans changes and improvements to the Golf Course.
- Assists with the requisition, storing, and inventories of equipment, pesticides, fertilizers, and other materials required maintaining Golf Course. Ensures appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and used properly.
- Assists in staff selections, training and job assignments. Approves leave and verifies time cards. Provides job descriptions for employees. Assists and provides input for employees annual performance evaluations. Supervises Tractor Operate Leaders, (15) Tractor Operators, (1) Mechanic Leader, and (1) Motor Vehicle Operator.
- May assist with annual budget estimates for course maintenance within the framework of a specified allocation. Submits request for purchase of all needed materials, new equipment and maintenance of items on hand. Maintains records as required by the MWR Department to include MSDS, safety, schedules, correspondence, purchase orders, etc.
- Assists, consults, and advises other MWR Division Managers on turf management.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.

- Hours of work vary to include split days off, possible late evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Incumbent must be able to work both indoors and outdoors, without a fixed schedule. The work areas are adequately lighted, heated and ventilated. Administrative work is performed in a normal office setting.
- Work may require sitting, walking, long periods of standing, bending and lifting of moderately heavy items up to 80 lbs. unassisted. Incumbent may lift heavier weight, but with assistance.
Qualifications

A qualified candidate must possess the following:
- Must possess a degree in Turf Grass management/Agronomy.
- Required to have a broad background in Golf Course maintenance and operations, having experience and knowledge of established agronomic practices.
- Required to have a knowledge of various types of pests and the pesticides required for treatment.
- Be a graduate of the Navy Department, Medical Entomology and Pest Control Technology Course of attend and complete the course within 6 months after employment.
- Experience in determining the method of operation and analysis of complex problems and interpretations of procedures.
- Required having a working knowledge and professional expertise of Golf Course equipment.
- Required having knowledge and understanding of the rules of golf along with the ability to view golf course from the perspective of the patron.
- Must possess ability to lead and supervise employees.
- Must have current and valid drivers' license.
