Pay is determined on the basis of qualifications and experience. Salary and benefits are competitive with other attorney positions in the federal government.
Duties
The position of Assistant Counsel provides representation in a number of circumstances: (1) when the Senate, its committees, members, officers or employees are defendants in civil actions relating to their official or representative capacities; (2) in response to subpoenas directed to the Senate, its committees, members, officers or employees in their official or representative capacities; (3) in civil actions initiated by the Senate to enforce its subpoenas; and (4) when the Senate intervenes or appears as amicus curiae in actions in which the powers of the Congress are placed in issue. Additionally, the office performs a variety of advisory functions, including counseling committees about investigatory procedures and questions that arise during the course of Senate investigations and advising Senate offices regarding a wide range of legal issues arising in connection with Senate activities and operations.
Requirements
Conditions of Employment
Under the statute establishing our office, "[a]ny individual selected as a[] . . . Counsel shall be learned in the law, a member of the bar of a State or the District of Columbia, and shall not engage in any other business, vocation, or employment during his term of service." 2 U.S.C. § 288.
Qualifications
The small size of the office requires that considerable responsibility be delegated to the Assistant Counsel. Accordingly, we will give preference to candidates who have superior academic qualifications and at least two years of litigation experience. The successful candidate shall hold or be eligible to obtain a security clearance. Start date is negotiable.
Education
Applicants must possess a JD degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.
