Duties

An appointment with the U.S. Attorney's Office offers unique and challenging experiences for the highly motivated attorney. The Office is seeking a candidate interested in working as a Criminal AUSA. This position can be filled in our Baltimore, MD or Greenbelt, MD office. Please be sure to indicate your preferred location in your cover letter.

The successful candidate will be responsible for legal research and writing, directing investigations, case development, presentation, and resolution. Assignments may include prosecuting a broad array of cases such as public corruption, tax offenses, bank, mortgage, and healthcare fraud, terrorism, firearms offenses, narcotics crimes, human trafficking, child exploitation and other violent crimes.

In addition to superior legal acumen, the successful candidate must possess a prosecutor's professional temperament and judgment. They must have the desire to do justice, meaning to vigorously use the power of the office to protect the public, but also to protect the rights of defendants based on strong ethical beliefs. Finally, the successful candidate must be an inspiring colleague and leader. Such leadership can be overt but can also be exercised by example in day-to-day work.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as training and experience progress.

Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

Qualifications



Required qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) and possess superior oral and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills, exhibit good judgment and function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment.

Preferred qualifications: Significant legal writing and oral advocacy, legal practice in federal court (or a federal court clerkship), or practice in criminal matters. Demonstrated ability and willingness to be self-reliant and motivated in reviewing and distilling voluminous records involving complex fact patterns, understanding and articulating complex legal doctrines; preparing high-quality briefs on strict time deadlines; making persuasive oral arguments; and assisting other attorneys in all divisions. Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $82,764.00 to $191,800, which includes 33.26% locality.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Evaluation Method: Once your complete application package is received, it will be reviewed to ensure you meet all job requirements. An attorney interview panel will then review all qualified applicants and make recommendations for invitation to interview. You will be notified if selected for an interview.
